The Martyrdom of the Apostles: St. BartholomewEl martirio de los apóstoles: san Bartolomé
Jacques Callot (French, 1592–1635) · c. 1632 · France
etching
What you would seeLo que verías
A small vertical etching in black ink on cream, slightly rough paper with irregular margins. The scene is crowded with figures and framed by tall buildings that compress the space. At the upper left, on a raised platform behind a dark railing, Saint Bartholomew appears bound to a tilted cross or frame between two ladders. Two executioners work beside him: one climbs and pulls at his body, while the other, higher up, leans over him. Below at the left, another man seems to fall or hang from the platform. The entire lower half is filled by a dense crowd seen mostly from behind, wearing long cloaks, hats, and tunics; some carry staffs or spears and all look upward. At the right, on a balcony, a crowned ruler extends his arm in a gesture of command, with attendants and onlookers in the middle ground. At the top, among swirling clouds and rays of light, a bearded figure floats with one arm raised. Callot's line is fine, nervous, and highly cross-hatched in the shadows, especially at the edges. Below the image, handwritten-style lettering reads: “M B. Bartholomaei Appos.”
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the crowd below, turned toward a spectacle it seems to accept as ordinary. Then move up to the small crossed figure at the left and to the authorities at the center and right. Finally, notice the figure emerging from the clouds: heaven watches the scene, but does not stop it.
ContextContexto
The Cleveland Museum of Art attributes this etching, dated around 1632, to Jacques Callot (1592-1635), one of the most influential French printmakers of the 17th century. It belongs to a series devoted to the martyrdoms of the apostles. Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles, was remembered in Christian tradition as having been flayed and crucified, although the historical details of his death are not known with certainty. Callot, renowned for his mastery of etching and for extremely animated small-format scenes, turns the episode into a public execution before officials and spectators. No further information is provided in the source description.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite the drama of the execution, the figures in the foreground are barely a few centimeters tall; Callot fits architecture, a crowd, executioners, and a heavenly apparition into a single small print.

- How does the small scale of the print affect the way we perceive such extreme violence?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción de una violencia tan extrema el hecho de que el grabado sea tan pequeño?
- What role does the crowd play: witness, accomplice, or mere spectator?¿Qué papel cumple la multitud: testigo, cómplice o simple espectadora?

I focus on the creamy, textured paper and Callot's densely hatched black ink. Everything is squeezed between tall buildings, as if air were missing. Up on the platform, Saint Bartholomew tied to the tilted frame is the clearest point, flanked by two executioners and two ladders. I am struck by how the fine, nervous line creates dense shadows along the edges while letting light breathe above, where the heavenly figure appears among clouds. Below, the dense crowd seen from behind tells me about the use and wear of this small print.

I look up to where Callot opened the sky among swirling clouds and rays of light. There floats the bearded figure with an arm raised, like a sun watching the scene squeezed by buildings. Below, the raised platform and the crowd looking upward remind me of a public eclipse, everyone focused on the same point. I like to trace diagonals: the tilted ladders, Bartholomew's frame, the ruler's gesture on the balcony. It is a theater of vertical gazes, from earth to sky, drawn with a fine, nervous line.

There are so many people! Almost everyone is seen from behind wearing cloaks and hats and looking up, like when there is a show in the square. Up on a high platform with a dark railing, I see Saint Bartholomew tied to a tilted structure and two mean men next to two ladders. On the other side, on a balcony, a man with a crown stretches out his hand as if giving orders. And even higher, among clouds with little rays of light, there is a bearded man floating. Under the picture there are handwritten letters I do not understand but they look very old.
