What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white etching with dense, energetic linework typical of the medium. In the foreground, kneeling on uneven rocky ground, is an elderly, semi-nude man with a long beard and a lean, muscular torso: St. Jerome. He is shown in profile, chest bare with a cloth draped around his waist, his right arm pulled toward his chest in a gesture of penitence and his left arm extended forward. At his feet, centered in the lower foreground, lies a skull resting on a book, and slightly behind to his left, a small lion walks among the rocks. The surrounding landscape is rugged and wooded: to the right, a large, gnarled tree with thick foliage grows atop a heavily hatched, dark crag; to the left, paler cliffs and distant trees create a sense of depth. Light seems to gather around the saint, whose outline is subtly emphasized by a faint halo. Along the bottom edge an inscription reads «Callot fe. S. Hieronymus. Cum Priui. Regis.» and «Israel ex.». The paper is creamy with a porous texture and the plate mark remains visible. Fine details — roots, rock striations, streaks of light or rain through branches — reward slow looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the kneeling saint in the lower third and follow his gesture toward the dark tree on the right. Then pause on the objects at his feet, the skull on a book and the lion in the midground. Notice how the contrast between pale cliffs and dense black foliage frames an open-air hermitage.

It is associated with French culture and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams Collection. Curious detailDato curioso

Jacques Callot pioneered the use of a hard varnish ground for etching, which allowed exceptionally fine lines and varied depths of biting, visible here in the rich range of shading within a small-scale landscape.

I focus on how the print is made. It is an etching, and you can see it in the dense, nervous line that builds shadows with cross-hatching. Look at the creamy paper with its porous texture and the clear plate mark around the edges. The kneeling old man gathers the light, while the large twisted tree on the right is rendered in an almost velvety darkness. The grain of the rocks, the roots, and the skull resting on a book are described with a precision that only mastery of the etched line can achieve.

What draws me in is the light in this desert of ink. The kneeling saint seems lit by a spotlight, with a subtle halo outlining him against the pale cliffs in the background. Everything around him is contrast, like a night sky: the shaded crag on the right is pure darkness, while the landscape on the left opens up with distant trees that create depth. This play of intense blacks and whites reminds me of stargazing, where a bright point only makes sense because of the vast darkness surrounding it.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see an old man with a long beard, no shirt, kneeling on rocks. He is tapping his chest and looks like he is praying really hard. Down at his feet there is a skull on top of a book, it is a little scary but also makes me curious! A little further back a tiny lion walks among the rocks, like it is keeping him company. Everything is drawn only with little black lines and there is a very twisty tree at one side. I like to search for the little lines that look like rain between the branches.
