What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, centered against a background that fades from black at the top to light gray below, a small bronze statuette of a standing bull rests on a flat rectangular base. The figure is compact and solid, seen in three-quarter view from the front, with its head turned slightly toward the viewer. Two thick, short horns curve inward and upward, with blunt tips, dominate the head. Around the neck hangs a thick circular ring, clearly modeled, sitting loosely. The surface is covered with an irregular, rough patina from millennia of corrosion: dark and bluish greens of verdigris predominate, mottled with ochre, reddish brown, and golden areas where the underlying metal shows through. Soft lighting reveals a granular texture, pitting and small crusts, especially on the legs, back and base. The eyes are suggested by oval incisions, the muzzle is short with marked lips, and the small ears lie close to the head. The four legs are straight and sturdy, with simply modeled hooves that merge into the plinth. The scale feels intimate, like a votive object that would fit in the palm of a hand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette and lyre-shaped horns, then move to the neck ring and the mottled patina. Notice how the light brings out color shifts and the eroded texture, turning the reading from a solid animal to an ancient archaeological object.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a bronze sculpture dated to the late 2000s BCE, at the end of the third millennium BCE, and catalogued as Egyptian, though marked with a question mark, indicating uncertain cultural attribution. The maker is unknown, as is typical for works of this age. It belongs to the Department of Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art and entered the collection through the bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. The type — a bull with a neck ring — suggests a possible votive or symbolic use linked to strength, fertility or a deity, a common motif in Egypt and neighboring regions. No further description is provided by the source, so many details about its function and findspot are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The bluish green covering much of the statuette is not paint but the natural patina of bronze: a layer of copper corrosion products formed over thousands of years, often preserved by conservators because it protects the metal and records its age.

What grips me is the skin of time. That dark green with ochre and bluish patches is not paint, it is thousands of years of corrosion on bronze. I see a granular surface, with pores and crusts, and little golden spots where the original metal still shows through. The thick ring around the neck is well preserved, and that makes me wonder how it was cast and polished so long ago. It is a small, intimate object that has survived with all its scars visible.

Those horns remind me of the constellation Taurus, which in ancient times marked the equinox and the start of spring. A tiny bull like this, with its ring around the neck, feels like a charm to ask for strength and protection, perhaps so sky and earth would stay in balance. We know it is catalogued as Egyptian or Near Eastern art from the late third millennium BCE, but with a question mark. That uncertainty is beautiful: like a star whose light reaches us without us knowing exactly where it comes from.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

He looks like an angry but cute little bull! He has chubby horns curving up like little moons and a huge ring like a necklace. I imagine someone carried him in their hand like a toy with powers. His skin is rough and stained green and brown, as if he was found buried in the garden after soooo many years. He stands firmly on his little base and stares at me with his oval eyes. If he could talk, he would surely say moo! really loudly even though he is tiny.
