What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a rectangular terracotta fragment photographed straight on against a plain grey background. It fills almost the entire frame and leans very slightly, with irregular, chipped edges, a top edge that is relatively straight, and a bottom left corner that is broken and uneven. Its surface is matte, rough, and grainy, in beige, greyish-brown, and faint reddish tones, with small pits, cracks, and worn areas. In the upper right, inside an incised rectangular frame, a deer appears in low relief in profile, facing left while leaping or rearing: slender legs, a compact body, a long neck, a pointed snout, and branching antlers swept backward. Above its back is a raised crescent moon; below its belly, a circular rosette with five or six petals around a center. The deer’s eye and small marks on its body are barely indicated. Outside the frame, at lower left, there are sharp angular scratches, like a zigzag. The entire lower third is crossed by a horizontal line and filled with larger, simpler incised curves, possibly the remains of another figure or ornament cut off by the break. Soft light from the left creates gentle shadows that make the relief legible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the deer inside its small frame, then notice how the moon above and the rosette below seem to hold it in mid-leap. Next, move down to the larger, incomplete incised lines: their change of scale and technique alters the sense of the whole tile.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as Deer, by an unknown maker, dated to the 300s CE and associated with Harwan in Kashmir, India. It is a terracotta sculpture held by the Cleveland Museum of Art in its Department of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, credited to the Edward L. Whittemore Fund. Harwan is known for early terracotta tiles with animals, figures, and geometric or floral motifs. This piece was probably part of a larger decorated surface, but its exact original placement and purpose are not known, nor are the identity of its maker or its specific religious meaning.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the deer never touches the ground. Suspended between a crescent moon above and a round flower below, its leap reads almost like a sign placed in the sky.

I pause on what time has done to this terracotta. It is a rectangular fragment with irregular edges, the lower left corner broken, and a matte, rough, grainy surface in beige and grayish brown tones with reddish traces. I notice the tiny pits, cracks and erosion that barely let us see the deer's eye. The soft light from the left helps us read the low relief inside its incised rectangular frame and the larger curved lines on the lower third interrupted by the break.

What hooks me is the miniature sky in this low relief. Inside the rectangular frame, the deer leaps in profile to the left and carries a crescent moon in relief on its back, crisp and elegant. Under its belly there is a circular rosette with five or six petals that looks like another moon or a simple sun. I like to imagine someone in Harwan, in the 300s CE, wanted to join the animal with the night and with a starry flower.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The deer looks like it is jumping so happily! It is sideways, with thin little legs stretched out, a long neck and antlers with little branches pointing back. It is leaping inside a little rectangle and carries a tiny moon on its back like a magic backpack. Underneath it has a round little flower and on the side there is a zigzag like a little lightning bolt. It looks very old and scratchy because it is made of clay from a long, long time ago.
