What you would seeLo que verías

A print in black ink on warm cream paper, slightly irregular at the edges, framed inside the scene itself by a great dark arch that occupies the top and sides like a doorway. In the left foreground, in strong shadow, stand two tall men in long, heavy robes: the older, bald one at center stretches his right arm outward in a firm gesture, while the other, with long hair and beard, listens beside him, turned three-quarters away. At their feet, seated on the ground with his back to us and seen from behind, is a small man in a loose shirt and hood, holding a hat or bowl as if begging; one leg is bent beside him. To the left, half hidden, onlookers crowd together—a pale-faced man in a hat, a woman, and other sketched faces. Behind the central pair rises an elaborate temple, with columns, arches, hanging cloths, and a massive round tower built up from dense cross-hatching. To the right the scene opens suddenly: pale sky, broad steps, low walls, a line of trees on the horizon, and small crowds of seated and standing figures drawn with only a few lines. Light is not even: velvety blacks on the left give way to an almost white brightness on the right. The scale shifts from intimate, life-sized foreground figures to a distant, miniature city.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, look under the arch, where the darkest lines gather around Peter, John, and the seated man. Then let your eye travel toward the bright, almost empty sky on the right: that contrast separates the miracle from the everyday crowd. Finally, notice the seated man's back turned toward us; we share his low position and wait with him.

ContextContexto

This is *Peter and John Healing the Cripple at the Gate of the Temple*, from 1659, by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), a Dutch artist. It is an etching with drypoint, catalogued as a print by the Cleveland Museum of Art, holder of this impression, credited to the Bequest of Ralph King and a purchase through the Norman O. Stone and Ella A. Stone Memorial Fund. The title refers to a story in the Acts of the Apostles: at a gate of the Temple in Jerusalem, Peter and John encounter a man unable to walk who is begging, and they heal him. The source record gives no further description, so specific details about this impression's earlier history are not known from the data provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

At the lower left, within the image itself, you can make out Rembrandt's signature and the date 1659, integrated into the shadow of the platform rather than placed outside the scene.

I focus on how this print in black ink on warm cream paper was made. Rembrandt used etching and drypoint here, and you can see it in the contrast between the velvety blacks on the left and the almost white brightness on the right. The large dark arch works like a frame within the frame and gathers shadow around the two heavy robes, while the tower and the hanging cloths are built with dense networks of crosshatched lines. It is a fragile balance between deep shadow and open light.

What grabs me is the light as if it were a physical phenomenon. On the left everything is concentrated night, intense shadow and dark figures under the arch, and on the right the print suddenly opens to a pale sky, wide steps and a horizon with trees. That shift from black to white reminds me of an eclipse ending. The small crowds in the background look like constellations made with just a few strokes. Rembrandt does not light evenly, he lets brightness travel from the background toward the gesture of the two standing men.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I first see the little man sitting on the ground with his back to us, holding his hat or bowl to ask for coins with his leg bent to the side. He makes me feel tender because he is alone down below while everyone else is standing. The two tall men in long robes look like kind superheroes, one stretches out his hand as if saying get up. Behind them there is a castle with columns and a huge round tower, and on the other side there are lots of tiny people on the steps. I like that one side is dark and the other is very light.

In the foreground, at the feet of the two robed men, what is the seated begging man holding?

    HintPista

Look down where the shadow is darkest, it is a round object for receiving something.

  2. #2

What warm color is the paper on which the black ink of the print was made?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, it is the background tone seen between the lines.

  3. #3

How many tall men in long robes are standing in the foreground under the dark arch?
