What you would seeLo que verías

Black-and-white vertical engraving presenting a bust-length portrait of a middle-aged man set inside a richly decorated oval architectural frame. In the foreground the sitter wears a dark velvet doublet with round buttons, satin sleeves with highlights, a draped cape and a stiff white ruff collar. A heavy chain of office crosses his chest, with rectangular links and pendants including a fleece emblem. His face is pale, with wavy hair to the nape, a thin moustache and trimmed beard, gazing calmly outward. Behind him a heavy curtain is gathered to the right, finished with a tasseled fringe hanging from the arch. The outer border imitates stone molding with beads and pearls, subtle shading and a lower plinth bearing a Latin inscription. Light is built with fine cross-hatching that renders textures of metal, fabric and skin, contrasting the deep black of the costume with the bright flesh and collar. Small details such as the folds of the sleeve and the sparkle of jewels show the engraver skill with the burin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the illuminated face and the gleaming chain, then follow the oval and the curtain to feel the theatrical staging. Linger on the sleeve texture and the inscription below; that tension between intimate face and ceremonial frame defines the Baroque portrait.

ContextContexto

The Cleveland Museum of Art records this work as Portrait of Philip IV, a 1600s engraving by Paulus Pontius (1603–1658) after Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), both Flemish, made as a print. It belongs to the Prints department as a gift of Mrs. A. Dean Perry. The source gives no precise date within the 1600s and no printing place. Philip IV ruled Spain from 1621 to 1665 and his official likeness was widely circulated through court portraits, including designs from Rubens circle in the Spanish Netherlands. The print exemplifies how engraving spread royal imagery across Europe.

Curious detailDato curioso

Paulus Pontius was Rubens principal engraver, renowned for translating the master paintings into pure line work that suggested color and volume using only black ink.

I focus on how the burin builds everything with very fine cross hatching. The deep black of the velvet doublet contrasts with the luminous white of the face and the starched golilla collar, and in between the grays model the skin and the satin sheen on the sleeves. Look at the order chain with its rectangular links and the hanging fleece pendant, each highlight is a different pattern of lines. The oval frame with pearl moldings, the heavy curtain and the tassel with fringe show the ornamental care of this Baroque print made to circulate the official portrait.

This portrait reminds me of watching an eclipse in its frame. The middle aged man with a thin mustache and trimmed beard appears inside an architectural oval as if he were a planet in orbit, surrounded by a stone ring with pearls. The light of the print works like a telescope: it brightens the pale face and the white golilla collar and leaves the rest in deep shadow. The gathered curtain and the tassel are the backdrop of the night sky. It is a Flemish print in black and white made to travel far, carrying the image of power through light and shadow.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the gentleman is leaning out of a stone oval window with little beads around it. He wears a black outfit with many round buttons, shiny sleeves and a very stiff white collar that looks like a plate. On his chest he has a big heavy chain with a shiny pendant. He has wavy hair, a little mustache and a small beard and he looks at us seriously. Behind him there is a thick curtain with a tassel with fringe hanging down. Everything is made only with little black and white lines but it looks very elegant, like a king from a storybook.
