What you would seeLo que verías

An etching in black ink on cream, slightly aged paper, wide and horizontal. The upper centre is lettered DECEMBER. Below, a frozen canal fills the lower half, its surface built from long horizontal lines that suggest smooth ice and faint reflections. On the right, a massive brick building with a round archway dominates the scene; above it rises a house with tiled roofs, small windows, chimneys and a very tall, steep thatched gable. Two men in caps and knee-length coats push low sleds carrying barrels beneath the arch, while in the centre others bend over barrels and bundles on the ice beside a small shelter. To the left, people skate and walk: a man sweeps or probes the ice with a long pole, couples glide in the middle distance, and three elegantly dressed women with tall headdresses stand with a kneeling child. Beyond them, the masts and rigging of boats trapped in the ice rise beside a round stone tower, a wooden bridge and low houses. A leafless tree, fine parallel hatching in the sky, and tiny figures on the far horizon complete this cold, busy, carefully drawn world.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the right, with the men hauling barrels beneath the dark brick arch, then follow the ice to the left toward the skaters and the elegant group in the foreground. Compare those who move for pleasure with those who move for work. Finally, look at the frozen boats and the bare tree: that stillness is what changes the whole scene into a portrait of December.

ContextContexto

According to the source, The Twelve Months: December is an etching by Dutch artist Jan van de Velde II (1593–1641), dated 1608–18 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to a series devoted to the twelve months, a popular theme in Northern European printmaking. In the Netherlands, frozen canals and rivers regularly reshaped daily life in winter, becoming places for transport, work and recreation. The Latin inscription along the lower edge links the end of December with the birth of Christ. The exact place represented is not known; it is probably a Dutch town imagined or combined from observed motifs.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the Dutch Republic, when canals froze, sleds could replace boats for moving heavy goods such as barrels — exactly the work shown in the lower right of this print.

  1. Who gets to enjoy the ice in this image, and who has to keep working on it?¿Quiénes pueden disfrutar el hielo en esta imagen y quiénes tienen que seguir trabajando sobre él?
  2. How does the artist make a frozen, almost silent month feel full of movement?¿Cómo logra el artista que un mes congelado y casi silencioso se sienta lleno de movimiento?

I pause on how the etching speaks through lines. The creamy, slightly aged paper holds a web of black and grey strokes that render the ice with long horizontals and the sky with fine parallel hatching. Notice the contrast between the solid brick arch and the very steep thatched roof, etched patiently to suggest texture. This horizontal print is meant to be read slowly, where every pole, barrel and skate is bitten with intention and careful control of acid on the plate.

December is darkness and also returning light. Here winter does not stop life, it transforms it. The frozen canal becomes street, workshop and rink at once. I see the word DECEMBER at the top like a calendar and below the still masts of icebound ships beside a round stone tower. The Latin inscription mentioned in the source recalls that the month ends with the birth of Christ. Cold shortens the days, yet the community moves together across the bright ice.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks so cold and so fun! The canal is like a giant mirror where everyone does something different. Some push sleds with barrels under a huge arch, others carry bundles and a man sweeps the ice with a super long pole. On the left people are skating and three ladies with tall hats watch a kneeling child on the ice. In the back there are little trapped ships and a leafless tree. It seems that even though it is freezing, no one wants to stay home.
