What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal drawing in pen, brown ink and wash over grayish, aged paper, with sketchy lines and soft shadows. At the center, a helmeted, muscular man steps forward over broken stones, bowed under the weight of an older man carried on his back and shoulders. The father's legs hang down and the son grips them tightly with both hands; his own bare, powerful legs search for footing on a fallen block. To the left, lower and smaller, a curly-haired child walks beside him, one hand raised near his face, looking outward with a worried expression. At the far left, on steps beside a classical pedestal topped by a sphere, a small dog bounds downward. To the right of the central pair, a woman in flowing drapery leans forward, one hand at her chest and the other extended, her head bowed; a physical gap separates her from the group. In the foreground lie fragments of carved architecture, including a large scroll-like volute. Behind them rises a classical corridor with columns and arches, half lost in smoke and loose strokes at left. Along the right margin, fainter, unfinished studies repeat poses of the carrying man and the woman. The palette is restrained: browns, tans, gray-blue paper and faint yellowish and white highlights.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the hunched figure in the center and follow the weight from Anchises's legs down to Aeneas's feet among the rubble. Then move right to Creusa: the empty space around her already separates her from the family. Finally, look at the faint sketches on the right edge, where the drawing reveals itself as a workshop in progress.

ContextContexto

Federico Barocci (1528-1612) made this drawing in Italy in 1587-88. It illustrates Book Two of Virgil's epic poem the Aeneid (29-19 BC): the Trojan hero Aeneas flees burning Troy, invaded by the Greeks, carrying his elderly father Anchises, who holds the household gods. He leads his son Ascanius by the hand, while his wife Creusa follows behind and, as the poem foretells, will be lost during the flight. According to the source, the drawing relates to a now-lost painting by Barocci and was also engraved by Agostino Carracci.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small dog bounding down the stairs at lower left, and Creusa's flowing hair and headscarf, appear in this drawing but not in Agostino Carracci's engraving after it.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the drawing make us feel the physical weight of Anchises and, at the same time, Aeneas's duty toward him?¿Cómo logra el dibujo hacernos sentir el peso físico de Anquises y, al mismo tiempo, el deber de Eneas hacia él?
  2. What does the distance between Creusa and the other three figures anticipate, even without showing her fate?¿Qué anticipa la distancia entre Creúsa y los otros tres personajes, aun sin mostrar su destino?
  3. What changes when we notice that the figures on the right are not part of the scene, but studies for it?¿Qué cambia cuando notamos que las figuras de la derecha no forman parte de la escena, sino que son estudios para construirla?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the grayish paper and the brown ink that has warmed over time. The line is loose and quick, and the wash creates soft shadows over Aeneas muscles and Creusas drapery. I notice stains, fibers, and touches of white to highlight the fallen block and the volute in the foreground. I am drawn to how Barocci leaves faint studies in the right margin, as if testing poses. It is a fragile preparatory drawing, where every line reveals urgency and care at once.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a night that is not dark but full of smoke. The columns and arches fade to the left like a constellation being erased. The pedestal with a sphere reminds me of a celestial globe, a small cosmos left behind as Troy falls. Aeneas moves forward bent under weight, like a planet carrying its old orbit, and the child beside him looks outward toward an uncertain future. Everything is motion and weight under an invisible sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The strong man carries his old dad on his back like they are playing horsey but they are escaping. His legs are very big and he steps on a broken stone. Below there is a little boy with curly hair walking alone and he looks worried. There is a tiny dog jumping down the stairs, I like him a lot! Behind them a lady in a long dress looks sad and stays behind. Everything is brown and it looks like there is smoke from the fire.
