What you would seeLo que verías
A white marble sculpture photographed against a smooth gray background, lit from above and slightly from the left, so soft shadows gather in the folds of the bodies and under the base. In the foreground, two nude figures tumble together on top of a large, irregular block of stone. Their bodies are so intertwined that at first it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Above, bent legs rise awkwardly into the air, one knee higher than the other; to the right, an arm bends with the hand loosely curled. On the right side a wing unfolds, its overlapping feathers elongated and pointed toward the edge of the group. Toward the center and lower down, the heads are bowed and pressed together, hair and faces partly hidden by arms, torsos, and legs. Small details reward slow looking: stretched fingers, a visible foot, the curve of a back, the tension of a bent limb. The skin is polished, smooth, and luminous, while the lower block remains rough, pitted, and uneven, with tool-like irregularities and a nearly flat front face. The forms seem to emerge from that raw mass rather than sit placed upon it. No clothing, attributes, or setting clarify a precise moment; the scale relative to a person is not given in the image.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the tangle of limbs and try to separate one body from the other; the difficulty is part of the effect. Then look for the wing on the right and the heads bowed downward, which turn an embrace into a fall. Finally, compare the polished skin with the rough base below.

ContextContexto
The Fall of the Angels, dated c. 1890-1900, is a marble sculpture by Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, the entwined couple recalls figures from The Gates of Hell, Rodin's monumental doorway inspired by Dante Alighieri's damned, punished for sins of the flesh. The winged figure alludes to the angels cast out of Heaven after siding with Satan, as in Revelation 12:4. Rodin preferred marble for erotic subjects. The exact original model and the specific identity of each figure beyond that reference are not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Rodin preferred marble for erotic subjects, and here the contrast is deliberate: the smooth, sensual surfaces of the bodies emerge from rough-hewn stone, as if the couple were blossoming into life out of hard, lifeless rock.

I focus on how Rodin works the white marble. The skin of the two figures is polished and luminous, almost soft to the eye, while the block below remains rough, porous and irregular, with rugged tool marks. That contrast is the non-finito effect, the forms seeming to emerge from the raw mass rather than simply resting on top. I notice the soft light from above and the left, the faint shadows in the folds, the wing with elongated overlapping feathers, the fingers and the foot glimpsed among the tangled bodies.

This fall makes me think about gravity. Two interlaced nude bodies plunge over a large irregular block, with no clothing or setting to hold them. Above, bent legs hang in the air in an awkward position, one knee higher than the other, an arm flexed with the hand loosely closed. According to the record the scene alludes to the angels expelled from heaven in Revelation 12:4 and recalls the damned from Dante's Gates of Hell. It is a descent without ground, a pure surrender to the void.

At first I could not understand anything, there are two people all tangled up and I cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. I see legs up high, a bent arm, a big wing with lots of little feathers, heads tucked together hidden among arms and legs. It looks like they are falling while hugging onto an ugly scratchy rock. The skin looks smooth and shiny, the rock below does not. It makes me giggle and feel a bit ticklish to see so many fingers, feet and backs everywhere, as if they were playing at falling together.
