What you would seeLo que verías

A painted limestone relief divided into three male figures in profile moving to the right, separated by vertical columns of hieroglyphs. Each figure wears a long wig, a false beard and a short kilt, with bare torsos painted in reddish and dark blue tones. On their heads they carry nome emblems, including a falcon and other provincial symbols. In their arms they hold trays overflowing with offerings — bread, fruit, birds, jars and bouquets of lotus and papyrus — painted in ochre, green and blue pigments still visible. Below and around them hang bunches of grapes, wheat sheaves and suspended birds; at their feet walk sacrificial animals such as antelopes, gazelles and waterfowl. The background is rough ivory-colored stone with erosion and pigment loss. Raking light emphasizes the low relief and finely carved details, such as almond-shaped eyes, musculature and the textures of feathers and plants. The composition is symmetrical and rhythmic, typical of a temple wall.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Notice first the repetition of the three silhouettes, then linger on what each one carries; no tray is identical. Look at the small animals at their feet and at the hieroglyphs between figures, which name each province and seal the offering as the abundance of the land.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, these blocks come from a temple wall of the New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep III, about 1391–1353 BCE. They show four figures — three are visible here — identified as nomes, or provinces, of ancient Egypt personified. Carrying trays heaped with offerings and leading sacrificial animals, they embody the bounty of the land brought to a god who stood in the upper register, facing the king. They may be from Amenhotep III's temple dedicated to the god Horus. The technique is painted limestone and the preserved color shows the original polychromy. The artist is unknown, as is common for official Egyptian art.

Curious detailDato curioso

The dark bluish-green pigment on the central figure is exceptionally well preserved and reflects a symbolic use of color to distinguish nome deities, while the reddish tone represents human skin.

What moves me is the color that survived for more than three thousand years. On the ivory limestone we can still see ochres, greens and blues on the breads, fruits and bouquets of lotus and papyrus. Notice how the low relief catches the raking light and reveals muscles and plumage carved with precision. There is erosion and pigment loss, but the polychromy lets us imagine the temple wall as Amenhotep III saw it. Each tray is a carefully painted inventory of abundance.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

These three figures moving to the right remind me of constellations in procession. Each man carries on his head the emblem of his nome, like a guiding star: one bears a falcon. In their arms they hold trays with breads, birds and jars, and at their feet antelopes and gazelles walk toward an offering. The vertical columns of hieroglyphs set the rhythm, like marks of a ritual calendar that organizes abundance under the temple cycle.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a parade to feed a god. Three men with long wigs and little kilts carry huge trays full of fruits, breads and little birds, and lotus flowers that look like lollipops. On their heads they balance funny symbols and they all walk the same way to the right. Below there are hanging bunches of grapes and little animals like gazelles and ducks also going to the party. Everything is painted red, green and blue and looks very tidy like a choreography.
