What you would seeLo que verías
A black and white engraving on light, slightly textured paper, centered and occupying almost the full height, depicts an ornate ewer in three-quarter view against an empty background. The vessel has a bulbous, smooth body, a narrow neck and a tall, pointed spout; the long, elegant handle rises high above the mouth and arches down, topped with a small winged figure. The surface is richly decorated with raised ornament: on the front, a bearded satyr mask holds scrolling foliage, flanked by two symmetrical birds and a small crayfish or lobster hanging below, crowned by a tiny head amid strapwork. On the sides appear satyr heads with flowing hair, scrolls and cartouche forms. The foot is a stepped pedestal adorned with another grotesque mask and foliate motifs. Fine hatching and cross-hatching create the illusion of polished silver, giving volume, shine and crisp texture, with the brightest highlights on the belly of the jug. A small monogram appears at lower left. Despite being a paper design, the print conveys monumentality and exuberant Renaissance ornament.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the whole silhouette first, from the ornamented foot to the high-arching handle. Then focus on the center of the body, where birds, foliage and a crustacean form a symmetrical axis topped by a small head. Notice how satyrs hidden in the handle and sides turn a serving vessel into a Bacchic narrative.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is an etching and engraving design for an ewer or wine jug by Virgil Solis (German, 1514–1562), active in Nuremberg from about 1530 to 1562. Classified as a print, its decoration and function relate to wine: the satyr on the front, satyr heads at handle and mouth, and birds and crayfish on the side are creatures linked to Bacchus and his revels, while the shape derives from the Greek oinochoe. Solis ran a busy printmaking workshop, and such prints served as models for craftsmen in other media, especially silversmiths. No further specific information about a patron or whether this design was ever executed in metal is provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
This print was not intended as wall art but as a workshop pattern, circulated among goldsmiths across Europe as a kind of Renaissance design catalogue for luxury metalwork.

I focus on the technique: this is an etching and engraving on light paper, made with extremely fine lines and cross-hatching that makes the ewer look like real polished silver. Notice how light shines on the bulbous body and how every scroll, leaf and satyr is built with precise strokes. At the bottom left you can still see the monogram of the artist, Virgil Solis. What I love is that it was never a jug, but a paper model for a goldsmith to copy in metal.

This ewer is like a constellation of wine symbols. Its shape comes from the Greek oinochoe, the jug for serving wine, and it is filled with creatures of Bacchus. On the front there is a bearded satyr mask holding foliage, with two symmetrical birds and a crab hanging below. On the sides and on the handle more shaggy satyr heads appear. Everything floats isolated on an empty background, as if this little mythological universe were suspended in space waiting for its feast.

This jug looks like it came from a fairy tale and it makes me giggle a little! It has a big shiny belly like it ate a lot, a super pointy spout like a bird beak and a giant handle that goes way up like a roller coaster. It is covered in little bearded faces with crazy hair, two birds looking at each other and even a tiny crab hanging down. At the bottom it has a little foot with another hidden face. It is not a real jug, it is a drawing so someone could later make it in silver.
