What you would seeLo que verías
The piece fills almost the entire frame, seen from directly above and centered against a very light, plain grey background, with no other objects to give a sense of scale. It is an almost perfectly circular, flat disc of polished bone in shades of ivory, honey, and beige, with faint grain and slightly translucent areas where the light reflects with a soft sheen. At the center is a clean, round hole, surrounded by a thick, raised ring of the same material. Around it, arranged in two irregular, staggered rings, are some thirty incised circle-and-dot motifs: each one looks like a small eye or target, sunken into the surface with a dark dot at its middle. A fine incised line marks the inner border, just inside a slightly raised outer rim. The surface shows the passage of time: small chips along the left and lower edges, dark dirt settled into some of the grooves, brownish stains, and uneven polishing from circle to circle. Some dots are black and deep; others are worn and pale. The composition is radial and repetitive, but a calm look reveals misalignments and hand-made variations that break the perfect symmetry.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the piece as a whole and follow its radial rhythm, from the central hole outwards. Then get closer to the small circles: notice that they are not identical, and that wear and darkened grooves make their hand-made character visible.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a spindle whorl by an unknown maker, dated between the 700s and 900s, from Iran in the early Islamic period, made of incised bone and held in the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. A spindle whorl is the weight fitted onto a spindle for spinning: its mass and rotation help twist and wind fibers such as wool or cotton into thread. We do not know who made it, who used it, or exactly where it was found. It was probably an everyday tool, decorated with a simple, repeated motif.

Curious detailDato curioso
The circle-and-dot motif that covers this whorl is one of the oldest and most widespread decorative patterns: it appears on bone, ceramic, and metal objects from many cultures, perhaps because it is easy to incise with a simple rotating tool.

I pause on the surface of this polished bone disc, in ivory and honey tones, dated between 700 and 900 and from Iran. I see the soft shine, the faint veins, and the uneven polish. I focus on traces of use: the nicks along the edge, the dark dirt trapped in the incisions, and the uneven wear of the dot-in-circle motifs. Each mark tells how it was used as a counterweight for spinning. I do not invent its personal history, but its material and wear speak of hands, time, and everyday work.

When I look at it from above, against that pale gray background, I see a kind of portable galaxy. The central hole is like a sun, and around it spin about thirty little targets with a dot in the middle, like eyes or stars arranged in two stepped crowns. The composition is radial, but nothing is perfect, there are handmade misalignments that I love. This spindle whorl, used to spin wool or cotton, would rotate to twist fiber, just as celestial bodies spin. A simple tool that holds rhythm and repetition.

It looks like a giant cookie full of little eyes! It is a honey and ivory colored bone circle, with a hole in the middle like a donut. Around it there are about thirty little circles with a tiny black dot inside, some really dark and some faded. If you spin it, I bet the little eyes would dance. I like that they are not all perfectly straight, you can tell someone made them by hand a very long time ago. It was used to make thread, but I would use it as a spinning toy.

I am the emptiness that lets everything spin, I am at the center and without me there is no thread. What am I?

Look at the middle of the bone disc, right where there is no material.

We are many, almost thirty, we look like targets or little eyes with a dark dot in the middle and we form crowns around the center. What are we?

Look for the repeated incisions in two stepped crowns over the ivory tone.

As a tool, what was this pierced bone disc used for?
HintPista
Think of wool or cotton spinning until it becomes thread.
