What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground, centered and isolated against a neutral light gray background, a small flattened sphere of bone is seen, a spindle whorl photographed from a slightly elevated angle. It fills almost the entire frame and displays a clean circular central perforation running from pole to pole. Its surface is yellowed ivory with creamy, toasted beige and subtle brown mottling from age and patina. Soft diffused light reveals a polished yet porous texture, with tiny dark speckles, micro-cracks, and worn edges around the hole. The entire sphere is covered with fine precise incisions: concentric circles with a central dot, small pitted dots in rows, and curved hook-like scrolls resembling stylized palmettes. The motifs are arranged in bands around the perforation and toward the equator, creating a dense symmetrical rhythm. At the top, small chips and material loss are visible alongside a thin vertical fissure crossing the decoration. The scale suggests an object only a few centimeters across, fitting in the palm, with gentle highlights on its rounded curvature and subtle shadows that emphasize its volume and tactile quality.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by looking at the central hole and how the dotted circles orbit around it like a constellation. Then trace the curved scrolls and notice their regular repetition. Look closely at the crack and the worn rim, traces of use and time coexisting with the precision of the carving.
ContextContexto
According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a spindle whorl by an unknown maker, dated to the 700s–900s, attributed to the early Islamic period in Iran. It is made of incised bone and is part of the Textiles department, a Gift of The Textile Arts Club. It served as a flyweight on a spindle to spin fiber, providing weight and momentum. Its exact archaeological findspot and context are not documented. Comparable whorls are well attested in Iran during the early Islamic centuries and show continuity in textile traditions with incised geometric decoration.

Curious detailDato curioso
Even though it is an everyday working tool, it is richly decorated with incisions that do not affect its mechanical function, showing how even modest implements received artistic finishing.

I observe this small spindle whorl in yellowish ivory bone with beige and brown veining that fits in the palm, pierced by a central hole from pole to pole. I notice its porous patina with micro fissures, dark pores and a vertical crack with material loss at the top. I admire the precise incised work forming bands of concentric circles with a central dot, aligned dimples and hook shaped volutes like stylized palmettes, all polished by the constant spinning of the spindle between the 8th and 9th centuries.

When I see this flattened bone sphere I think of a small planet with craters and engraved orbits. The central hole is like its polar axis, and around it spin rings of concentric circles with a dot in the middle, like miniature solar systems. The hook shaped volutes look like comets swirling. Although it is a spindle whorl for spinning from 8th to 9th century Iran, its very symmetrical incised decoration and its stable spinning shape remind me how weight keeps motion going, just like inertia in space.

It looks like a little bone donut the color of a cookie with a tiny hole in the middle to put your finger through. It is all scratched with little circles with a dot inside, like little eyes, and with tiny hooks that look like little tails spinning. It looks very old, yellowish with brown spots and even has a little crack on top where a tiny piece broke off. I imagine it spun super fast on a little stick to make thread, like a top that never falls. It fits in my hand and I want to spin it!
