What you would seeLo que verías
The painting is a wide, luminous panoramic view of the Piazza San Marco in horizontal format. In the foreground, the vast stone pavement with its light grey and beige geometric pattern is dotted with tiny figures in dark hats and cloaks who stroll, chat in small clusters or linger near white parasols of street stalls; long soft shadows suggest morning light. On the left, filling the vertical edge in close view, the richly decorated façade of St. Mark's Basilica displays arches, mosaics, bulbous domes, Gothic pinnacles and statues in aged ochre, off-white and muted gold, with a finely carved marble texture. Beyond it, the Doge's Palace recedes toward the lagoon, where masts and distant domes appear under a pale sky. At the center, the tall brick campanile dominates vertically with its grey-green pyramidal roof and clock face, casting a crisp shadow. To its right stretches the long, low Procuratie Nuove, a two-storey building with continuous arcades and chimneys along the roofline in warm terracotta and cream tones. At the far right, closing the square, stands the classical façade of San Geminiano church, now lost, with pediment and columns. The sky occupies nearly two thirds of the canvas, a muted blue-grey with soft billowing white clouds, diffuse light and clear air that create deep perspective and a sense of urban openness. The brushwork is precise and detailed, typical of vedute painting, with sharp architectural definition.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the campanile that vertically divides the canvas, then let your eye move left and right to compare the ornate basilica with the regular arcades. Follow the pavement pattern into depth to feel how human scale relates to monumental architecture. Finally notice the small church on the right, whose disappearance today completely reshapes our image of the square.
ContextContexto
This is an oil on canvas by Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto (1721–1780), nephew and pupil of Canaletto, dated to about 1740 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It faithfully depicts Piazza San Marco: St. Mark's and the Doge's Palace on the left toward the lagoon, the campanile in the center, and the Procuratie Nuove with the church of San Geminiano on the right. That church was removed in the 19th century under Napoleon to join the two wings of the Procuratie across the west end. Like his uncle, Bellotto specialized in vedute sought after by British travelers on the Grand Tour, and he later worked for courts in Dresden, Vienna, Warsaw and Munich. The work exemplifies 18th-century topographical painting.

Curious detailDato curioso
The church of San Geminiano seen at the far right end of the square, opposite St. Mark's, no longer exists: it was demolished in 1807–1809 under Napoleonic rule to build the Napoleonic Wing that now closes the western side of Piazza San Marco.

I focus on the sharpness of the pavement and how Bellotto recorded each stone in grays and beiges with long morning shadows. I look at the Basilica of San Marco on the left, with its arches, mosaics and bulbous domes in aged ochres and golds, and the brick campanile at the center with its gray-green pyramidal roof. The precise vedute brushwork tells me this is a topographic painting made to last and to document.

What attracts me most is the light and the sky, which fills almost two thirds of the canvas in grayish blue with soft white clouds. That diffused light and the sharp shadow of the campanile on the pavement suggest a clear morning and let us read the vastness of the square. I like to imagine how Bellotto used that luminous atmosphere to create depth, from the Procuratie Nuove in terracotta and cream to the lagoon with masts in the distance.

This square is huge! I like counting the tiny people with hats and dark capes walking or chatting in little groups on the floor with geometric patterns. I see white parasols from little stalls and a giant sky with fluffy clouds. On the left there is the church with lots of little domes on top and on the right some long buildings with arches. In the middle there is a super tall tower that looks like it touches the clouds.
