What you would seeLo que verías

A small sculpture of a reclining water buffalo occupies the center, seen in profile against a plain backdrop that fades from black at the top to soft gray below, like an empty studio surface. The body is carved from pale celadon jade, almost whitish-green, with a smooth, polished, slightly translucent finish that catches bright highlights along the back, forehead, and foreleg. The massive torso forms a calm horizontal oval. The head, at left, turns back toward its own body and slightly toward the viewer: it has two backward-curving horns, small pointed ears, almond-shaped eyes with incised lids, a broad muzzle, and a short line for the mouth. The front legs are folded beneath the chest, with rounded knees and small hooves marked by a notch; the hind leg is suggested by a large circle on the flank and a low, extended lower leg. A thin tail curls against the rump and ends near the hoof. There are faint whitish, rougher patches on the tail and rear hoof. No base, people, or landscape appear, and without a scale reference its exact size cannot be determined from the photograph.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the head looking back, then follow the unbroken curve of the back toward the haunch. Notice how few lines were needed to suggest legs, hooves, and tail. That restraint is what makes a very hard stone feel like a soft, resting body.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as 'Reclining Water Buffalo,' by an unknown maker, dated 1642–1722, from Qing dynasty China (1644–1911), Kangxi reign, and carved in jade. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the Chinese Art department. According to the museum, during the Ming and Qing dynasties luxury objects reached wider sectors of society — women, merchants, and literati outside official posts — while imperial patronage and urban growth encouraged fine craftsmanship. This buffalo exemplifies the carving skill needed to compete in that market. The exact carver, place of production, original owner, and original use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Jade is so hard that it was traditionally not cut like wood or soft stone, but shaped slowly by abrasion with hard sands and grinding tools; that patient process contrasts with the animal's relaxed pose.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how light glides over this very pale celadon jade, almost whitish, from Qing dynasty China between 1642 and 1722. I see the back, forehead and foreleg with polished highlights and slightly translucent areas, plus whitish and rougher patches on the tail and hind hoof. The carving is precise: curved horns, almond eyes, notched hooves and the body at rest against a plain backdrop fading from black to soft gray.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This reclining buffalo feels like a quiet constellation. Its torso forms a stable horizontal oval, like a calm horizon, and the head turns to the left toward the viewer. I think of cycles and rest, not speed. We know it is jade from Qing China, Kangxi reign, by an unknown maker and now kept at the Cleveland Museum of Art, but we do not know who carved it or what it was used for. That mystery, like the night sky, invites slower looking.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the buffalo is taking a nap! It is lying down with its little legs folded underneath and its thin tail tucked against its body. It has curvy little horns, pointy ears and a wide snout. Its color is super light green, like lime ice, and it shines on the back and forehead. It sits alone in the center on a backdrop that is black on top and soft gray below. Seeing it so calm and unhurried makes me feel peaceful.

  1. #1

What pale and shiny material is the reclining animal in the center carved from?

    HintPista

It is a highly valued stone in China, with a green tone that is almost whitish and highlights on the back.

  2. #2

To which side does the buffalo turn its head and what shape are its horns?

    HintPista

Look at the profile: the head is not facing forward and the horns are not straight.

  3. #3

How many folded legs can you clearly see tucked under the buffalo's chest?

    HintPista

Look under the torso where rounded knees and notched hooves appear.
