What you would seeLo que verías
A single manuscript page fills almost the entire image, shown straight on against a plain, light background. There is no illustration and no human figure: the protagonist is the writing itself, arranged in about fourteen horizontal lines that run from right to left across aged paper. The script is fluid and cursive, with tall vertical strokes, deep curves that dip below the line, compressed words, and dots placed with precision. Most of the ink is black or dark brown, but occasional words and fragments appear in reddish ink, creating small points of warmth within the dense text block. The paper is a warm, uneven beige, darker and more mottled toward the edges, with soft stains, slight foxing, and a larger brownish mark near the lower right. A thin frame of fine red and dark lines borders the text, with a broader, paler margin around it. The corners look slightly worn and the surface has the matte, fibrous texture of old handmade paper, with areas where the ink sits more heavily and others where it fades. The scale feels intimate, like a page meant to be held close and read slowly. Light is even and flat, revealing texture without dramatic shadow. Small irregularities — a denser blot, a finer stroke, a line that crowds its neighbor — reward calm, unhurried looking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the rhythm of the lines: follow the script’s swells and pauses from right to left. Then look for the words in red ink, small breaks in the dark flow. Finally, notice the worn edges and the stain at the bottom, where the page’s physical life becomes visible.
ContextContexto
This is a text page from the *Tuti-nama* (*Tales of a Parrot*), dated to around 1560 and produced in Mughal India at the court of Akbar, who reigned from 1556 to 1605. Its author is unknown. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held, it was made with gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper, although this folio is dominated by writing. The *Tuti-nama* is a Persian cycle of tales derived from older Indian narrative traditions, in which a parrot tells stories. Which specific passage appears here is not stated in the source record, and no transcription is provided, so that remains unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: although it may look at first like a uniform block of black writing, a few words and strokes were picked out in red ink, probably to mark emphasis, divisions, or names within the text.

If you look closely you will see this is not perfect paper, and that is what I love. It is a warm beige that darkens toward the edges, with mottling, light speckling and a brownish stain near the lower right corner. The black ink pools heavier in some strokes and fades in others, and a few words in reddish ink break the block. The thin frame of red and dark lines is a bit worn at the corners. Everything speaks of a handmade page from around 1560, made to be held close and cared for.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
It reminds me of looking at the sky with the naked eye, without a telescope. There is no illustration or human figure, just about fourteen lines of script reading from right to left on a pale ground. The light is even and flat, with no dramatic shadows, so you can pick out each descending curve and each precise dot. That intimacy, that small scale for slow reading, makes me think of constellations of ink: the reddish touches are like warm stars inside a dense dark night of continuous text.

It looks like a block of waves with little dots. The letters are tall and dip down with curly tails, all squeezed into about fourteen lines, and you read them backwards from how I read, from right to left. Some words are in red and look hidden among the black. The paper looks very old, like beige with stains, and it has a little red box around it like a frame. I want to count the dots and see where the ink got thicker because someone pressed harder with the pen.
