What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume fills the frame against a dark, plain background, seen straight from above. Two vellum pages form a broad, slightly curved spread, with the worn fore-edges of many leaves visible at the sides and a brown binding edge peeking out at the top and bottom. Each page carries two dense columns of Gothic Latin script in dark brown ink, broken up by rubrics in red and by initials in red, blue, pink, and gold. On the left page a very tall, slender decorated initial descends almost the full height of the text block, its stem patterned in pink, blue, and white. From several initials, fine vine tendrils curl into the margins, bearing small trefoil ivy leaves in green, blue, red, and gold, some turning like tiny pennants. Near the bottom left and midway down the right page are larger square historiated-style initials with dark grounds, circular interlace, and burnished gold. The parchment is creamy and uneven, with soft shadows in the central gutter, faint show-through, small stains, and tiny marginal notes. The impression is of orderly, luminous density: hundreds of abbreviated words held within a delicate, branching vegetal frame.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the spread as a patterned whole, then move closer to one column and follow the alternation of dark script, red rubrics, and blue and gold initials. Look at the left and right margins: the slender vines grow out of the initials and frame the text without overwhelming it. A small initial bearing leafy ornament reveals the hand-painted care behind the apparent regularity.

ContextContexto

This open spread is folio 106r of the Gotha Missal, produced in Paris around 1375, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum by the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, an illuminator active at the court of King Charles V of France, who died in 1380. Its refined decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books made for aristocratic or royal patrons. It may have belonged to Charles V, though this is not provable: there are no royal portraits and no colophon. It probably belonged to a Valois prince. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its magnificence, the book carries no royal portrait or colophon naming its patron, so its possible ownership by Charles V can be suggested but never proved from the manuscript alone.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I linger on the creamy vellum and how it breathes under the dark brown ink and red rubrics. I see two dense columns of gothic script per page, with initials in red, blue, pink and burnished gold that still catches the light. That very tall initial on the left and the squared ones with interlace point to Paris around 1375, workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux. The ivy sprays with little green, blue and gold leaves are fragile and there are already spots and show-through. It is an ordered, delicate luxury made to endure in liturgical use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at these two open pages on a dark ground I think of an ordered constellation. Each column of Latin text is like a dense star field and the red rubrics act as reference points so you do not get lost. The burnished gold in the initials works like tiny suns reflecting light and guiding the eye, just as we use bright stars to find our way. The ivy leaves curling in the margins look like delicate orbits. It is a map made on vellum in Paris around 1375, designed for prayer following a visual rhythm.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a big open book like two little roads full of tiny brown letters. It has special pretty letters in red, blue and gold that shine and one super long letter going down the whole page like a slide. Along the edges there are little vines with green, blue and red leaves that look like tiny flags. The page is not white, it is creamy and looks soft but with little spots. I imagine someone made it by hand a very long time ago in Paris to read in church.
