What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from front on a black background, photographed slightly from above, with the spine barely visible on the left and the thick, cream edges of many pages on the right. The binding is plain dark-brown tooled leather. Both leaves are off-white vellum, slightly wavy at the edges. The text, in Latin and small, tight Gothic script in dark brown ink, is laid out in two columns per page, interrupted by rubrics in red and ornamental initials in blue, red, gray, and gold with white filigree. On the left page a framed miniature stands out: over a gold ground patterned with tiny lozenges, a bright standing figure with a halo gestures toward a kneeling, praying figure, also haloed, in a gray robe. Between them rise two slender trees with dark, umbrella-like canopies. Around the text, fine stems branch through the margins with small pointed leaves in green, blue, red, and orange, tiny trefoils, and touches of gold. At upper right a hand has written '117'; the surface is matte, with only the gold faintly gleaming.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the small miniature on the left and identify the dialogue between the two figures. Then follow the vines that spill from the frame into the margins. Finally, compare the dense order of the columns with those free, almost hand-drawn tendrils: the whole page holds that tension.

ContextContexto

This opening belongs to the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris around 1375 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380, and his workshop. It may have belonged to Charles V, but that cannot be proven: it has no royal portraits and no colophon. It was probably made for a Valois prince. It takes its name from the dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

If you look closely, you will see this is not just any book. It is vellum, prepared animal skin, in an ivory tone, slightly wavy at the edges, and that tells me a lot about its age. Notice the dark brown leather spine on the left and the thick creamy fore-edge on the right. The two columns of tight gothic script, the rubrics in red and the initials in blue, red and gold with white filigree are made with ink, tempera and gold leaf. The gold background in the miniature is the only part that shines. Everything else is matte and fragile.

What caught my eye was the light. On the left page, against a gold background with a lozenge pattern, there are two haloed figures: one standing and gesturing, the other kneeling in a grey tunic with hands clasped in prayer. Between them stand two slender trees with dark umbrella-shaped crowns. That gold is no accident, in a missal made in Paris around 1375 it was meant to evoke eternity, like a sky without night. And around the text, those ultra-fine vines with tiny green, blue, red and orange leaves look like constellations drawn in the margins.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a book of secrets. It is open facing forward on a black background and it looks super thick on the right side, with lots of creamy pages. The letters are tiny and packed together in two columns and some are red or blue with shiny decorations. My favorite part is the little picture with the gold background where there are two people with glowing rings on their heads and two skinny little trees in the middle. And around it there are vines with colorful little leaves and tiny gold dots, as if someone drew a playful vine curling around the words.
