What you would seeLo que verías
An open book fills the frame, seen from slightly above, with two creamy vellum pages joined at a softly shadowed central gutter and slightly wavy, aged edges. Each page is laid out in two dense columns of dark brown Gothic script in Latin, punctuated by initials in red and blue, small guides, and rubrics that break the text into ordered blocks. On the lower-left page, framed in gold and set into the text, is a rectangular miniature: Saint Michael the Archangel, haloed, with large blue-grey wings raised, a long pale robe, a sword lifted in one hand and a shield in the other, standing over a small grey dragon on a green mound. Its background is deep patterned red with fine gold ornament. From the miniature and large initials, delicate vine stems curl into the left and lower margins, bearing pointed ivy-like leaves in green, blue, pink, and gold, tiny buds, and small flourishes. The facing page has no large picture but several ornate initials in blue, pink, red, and gold, with similar but sparser tendrils in the margins and a red folio number, 125, at upper right. Light is even, revealing vellum grain, slight stains, prickings, and page thickness at the fore-edge.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the miniature on the left page, where eye and gold immediately draw you in, then follow the vine stems escaping into the margins. Next, compare the decorated initials across both pages and notice how red and blue guide reading without modern punctuation or spacing. The quietest detail—the ageing of the vellum at the edges—reminds you this was a handled object, not only an image.
ContextContexto
This is an opening of the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris around 1375, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. A missal gathers the texts needed to celebrate Mass. The Cleveland Museum of Art attributes most of its decoration to the Master of the Boqueteaux, an illuminator active at the court of Charles V of France, who died in 1380, and to artists in his workshop or circle. Its lavish quality suggests an aristocratic or royal patron, probably a Valois prince; that it belonged to Charles V himself is possible but not provable, as it has no royal portraits or colophon. Its name comes from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite its royal-level decoration, the book preserves no portrait or colophon naming its first owner, so its most famous possible patron—Charles V—remains an informed hypothesis rather than a proven fact.

Look at the creamy vellum, with its wavy edges and small age spots: it is not paper, it is prepared skin. The brownish ink is very stable, but the gold in the miniature shines differently, because it is applied as a thin leaf. I pause on the two columns of gothic script and the shadowed gutter: the book remains flexible after more than six hundred years. The ivy leaves in green, blue and pink in the margins are delicate, and the gold leaf on the dark red background has a very fine stamped pattern that we protect from light.

That dark red background with golden ornament reminds me of a night sky stamped with stars. In the center, Saint Michael with raised bluish gray wings seems suspended over a green mound, with raised sword and shield, stepping on a small gray dragon. It is a small miniature between two columns of text, but it works like a constellation: the gold catches the light and organizes the page. I like to think that the illuminator in Paris, around 1375, also wanted the divine to shine like a firmament.

There is a knight with wings! He holds a sword up high and a shield, and he is standing on a tiny gray dragon that looks like it already gave up. He is in a little rectangle with a very red background and golden dots, at the bottom of the left page, between the letters. I like the little vines that come out of the rectangle and curl around the border with green, blue and pink leaves. On the other side there are big colorful letters and a red number at the top that is 125. It is a huge and very old book.
