What you would seeLo que verías
An open bound volume seen from above, showing two full parchment pages in pale ivory, each filled with dense text in two narrow columns. The script is tiny Gothic minuscule in black ink, punctuated by red and blue lettering that signals new prayers or sections. Along the inner gutter of each column, large illuminated initials in vivid blue and red anchor the layout, each with a burnished gold ground and delicate foliate extensions in muted red, blue and sage green that trail into curling vines tipped with tiny leaves. Some initials enclose minute geometric or plant motifs. The fore-edge reveals the book's thickness, hundreds of slightly cockled, creamy leaves with deckled edges, housed in a dark brown blind-tooled leather binding worn at the head. Even, frontal lighting shows the soft, matte texture of vellum, faint stains and creases from centuries of handling, and the subtle metallic glint of gold. A small handwritten foliation, 128, appears at the top right. The overall composition is orderly and opulent, a tight grid of black lines enlivened by vertical flickers of color.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the central gutter where the two pages meet, then follow the column of illuminated initials that act like beacons within the black script. Look closely at the hairline vines sprouting from each initial and how the touches of red structure your reading of the crowded page.
ContextContexto
This opening is from the Gotha Missal, a deluxe liturgical manuscript made around 1375 in Paris, France, using ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its decoration is typical of high-end Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons. Much of the work is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, an artist active at the court of King Charles V, who died in 1380, and whose style was shared by several Paris illuminators. It is not known for certain if the book belonged to Charles V, as it has no royal portrait or colophon, but its richness suggests it was made for a Valois prince. It is named after the German dukes of Gotha, later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite its age of about 650 years, this vellum manuscript still retains its original leather binding and the matte shimmer of real gold leaf inside the initials.

If you look through my eyes you will see the light ivory parchment is not perfect, it has a velvety texture with faint stains, gentle waves and tiny holes that tell its age. The gothic script forms two very tight and orderly columns in black ink, with red rubrics and touches of blue marking new sections. I focus on the illuminated initials in blue and red with matte gold backgrounds and curled foliage in pale green, red and blue. The dark leather binding, worn at the top, still protects hundreds of pages that have survived since around 1375.

I see this book as an orderly sky. The two columns of text are like two vertical constellations moving with rhythm and discipline across the ivory background. The touches of red and blue act as signals so you do not get lost, like colored stars marking reading paths. The gold in the initials glows without glitter, like ancient light trapped on the page, and the tendrils curling up and down remind me of vegetal orbits. Even the number 128 at the top right is a quiet coordinate to help you navigate this universe of ink and vellum.

It looks like a giant book someone filled with tiny and super straight letters. It is open in the middle and you can see two creamy pages full of black letters, with some big blue and red letters that shine with gold. From those big letters come curly little vines that go up and down like wandering plants. The book is very thick and its cover is dark and a bit old. I like counting the columns and looking for tiny stains because you can tell many people have used it with care.
