What you would seeLo que verías
A thick book lies fully open, photographed from above against a nearly black grey ground. It fills almost the entire frame. Its vellum leaves are ivory-cream, with uneven edges, gentle waviness, and faint marks of age. Along the outer sides, the worn brown leather binding and the layered bulk of many pages are visible. Each page is handwritten in Latin, in small, dense Gothic script arranged in two columns. The main ink is dark brown or black, enlivened by rubrics and initials in red and blue. Certain capitals are much larger, set in square frames and illuminated with plant motifs in deep blue, red, green, and gold. Slender stems spring from those initials and branch across the margins as curling tendrils ending in pointed, star-like leaves in blue, pink, red, and green. The right-hand page is crisp and legible in appearance; on the left, the writing looks paler and the text from the verso shows through, adding a ghostly grey layer between the lines. A small foliation mark appears at the upper right. There are no human figures: the vegetal ornament and orderly calligraphy convey quiet luxury, patience, and ceremonial use.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow one decorated initial, then trace the vine that escapes from it into the margin. Next compare the two pages: the difference in sharpness changes the whole object from a text to be read into a material surface. Finally, look at the worn edges and the show-through to sense its age.
ContextContexto
This is folio 128v of the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris, France, around 1375 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a blind-tooled leather binding. A missal gathers texts used for Mass. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to the king or to a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain: there are no royal portraits or a colophon. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite its name, the missal was not made in Gotha: it takes that name from the German dukes of Gotha, who owned it centuries after its creation in Paris.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the ivory cream vellum with irregular edges and gentle waves that reveal its animal origin and centuries of handling. I notice how the dark brown ink stands out against the red and blue rubrics, and how the gold still catches light in the large initials. I am struck by the ghostly show through of text from the other side on the left page, which reminds me how thin each leaf is and how much care is needed to preserve its balance and legibility.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer this page feels like a star chart: the two tight columns of gothic script are like orderly paths and the large initials in blue, red, green and gold are bright markers that signal where a new passage begins. The thin vines curling through the margins look like orbits dotted with little star shaped leaves. There are no human figures, only this patient order that, like the night sky, invites quiet reverence and slow reading under soft light.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
I am eight years old and I see a big chunky book open like a creamy blanket covered in tiny tight letters in two columns. I love the huge letters in blue and red with shiny gold that look like little houses at the start of the text. From them twist tiny branches with little colorful leaves that snake along the edge like vines. There are no people drawn, just letters and little plants, but you can tell someone made it with lots of patience for an important ceremony.
