What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a thick bound volume open flat against a dark, almost black background, seen from directly above. Two vellum pages fill most of the frame, their surfaces creamy, matte, and slightly uneven, with wide empty margins around the writing. On the left, the stacked fore-edges of many earlier pages form a dense striped block; at the top and right, the worn brown leather binding peeks out, scuffed at the corners. Each page carries two narrow columns of dense Latin script in dark brown-black Gothic lettering, with lines so regular they read at a distance as a woven texture. Rubrics and small marks in red break up the columns, while larger initials punctuate the text in blue, rose-pink, red, and touches of gold, some filled with fine white filigree penwork. Most initials stay neatly inside the column, but at the lower left of the right-hand page one ornate initial sends a curling black vine with pointed leaves and tiny buds down into the blank margin. At the upper right corner, a small red notation and the number 145 are visible. The light is even and soft, revealing the skin-like grain of the vellum without glare.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the rhythm of the four columns as an abstract pattern, then move closer to the larger initials. Notice the initial at the lower left of the right-hand page: its scrolling vine escapes the text block and changes the page from a grid into something organic.
ContextContexto
This open spread is folio 143r of the Gotha Missal, a bound manuscript made in Paris, France, around 1375 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380, and his workshop circle. It possibly belonged to Charles V or another Valois prince, but this is not provable: there are no royal portraits and no colophon. Its name comes from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail is that, among dozens of orderly initials, only the initial at the bottom of the right-hand page grows a long vine with leaves and small buds that invades the lower margin.

I pause on the creamy, matte and slightly irregular vellum, and how it breathes under the even light. The dense block of page edges on the left reminds me that this thick book holds hundreds of sewn leaves, protected by the worn brown leather binding. I look at the gothic script in very dark brown, so regular it looks woven, arranged in two columns per page, with red rubrics guiding the eye. I love the initials in blue, pink, red and gold, and especially that black vine with pointed leaves that escapes into the blank margin.

I see this folio 143r as a map of medieval order. Against a dark background, the two open pages are like two creamy skies divided into columns of text, constellations of very dark brown gothic letters. The red rubrics are guiding stars and the initials in blue, pink, red and gold mark cardinal points. At the top right, that small 145 in red looks like a coordinate. And below, the black vine curving with tiny buds is like an orbit escaping the grid, reminding us there is always room for the unexpected.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This book looks huge and very old! It is open like wings on a black background and you can see lots of little pages stacked on one side. The pages are creamy and have tiny brown letters packed together in two columns, with little red dots and pretty letters in blue, pink and gold that shine. My favorite is the one with a black vine with pointy leaves that comes out of the text and dances in the white space, as if it wants to escape. At the top there is a little red number, 145, like its secret name.
