What you would seeLo que verías

An open book fills almost the entire image, seen straight on against a dark, neutral background. Two large vellum pages spread left and right from a soft central gutter, their edges slightly wavy and uneven. Each page holds two dense columns of small Gothic handwriting in dark brown-black ink, with a regular, rhythmic texture. Short passages and headings in red ink break up the columns, and at several points large decorated initials interrupt the text: deep blue and rose-pink letters heightened with white filigree, touches of gold, and tiny coloured details. The most elaborate initial, near the lower part of the left page, extends into a delicate marginal flourish of curling stems and small pointed leaves in green, blue, pink, and gold. The margins are wide, creamy, and mostly empty, making the text blocks feel ordered and airy. At the upper right corner the number “148” is written. The vellum looks smooth but aged, with faint stains, soft shadows at the folds, and slightly darkened edges; the worn leather binding is just visible around the outside. The scale feels intimate yet monumental: not a single sheet, but a thick, heavy volume meant to be opened, read, and preserved.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the spread as a whole: two calm blocks of writing surrounded by wide, quiet margins. Then move closer to the painted initials and notice how colour suddenly gathers there. That contrast changes the reading of the page, from a uniform text into a landscape with pauses, entries, and small points of light.

ContextContexto

This is folio 148r of the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris, France, around 1375, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books made for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, active at the court of King Charles V. It may have belonged to Charles V or to a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain, as it has no royal portraits or colophon. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its magnificence, the manuscript has no royal portrait or colophon, so its possible ownership by Charles V cannot be proved.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at the vellum and how it still breathes after so many centuries. I see two creamy pages with soft stains and wavy edges that reveal handmade work. The columns of gothic script are very regular, but what moves me is the material itself: the brownish-black ink, the red touches to guide reading, and the initials in blue, pink and gold with white filigree. That curling vine with tiny green and gold leaves required an extremely steady hand. I think of the tempera, the burnished gold and the tooled leather that still holds this weight.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this book as an ordered sky. The two columns per page are like aligned constellations, and the initials in blue and pink with gold act as guide stars that tell you where to begin. The red breaks the rhythm like a bright signal to keep you from getting lost. I am intrigued that the number 148 sits at the top, marking coordinates in a universe of pages. Even without painted stars, the precision of the gothic script and the symmetry of the open volume remind me of a map made for finding your way night after night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant book that would not fit in my backpack. It has two very large pages full of tiny little letters that look like ants in lines. I like the big colorful letters, one blue with pink and shiny gold that has a tail with little green leaves. The red looks like someone underlined the important parts. The edges are creamy and look a bit stained as if the book has lived a long time. I wonder how much it weighs and if it makes a noise when it closes.
