What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume fills almost the entire frame, seen from slightly above against a dark, nearly black background. At the center, the gutter sinks into a soft shadow where the two vellum pages meet; on the far left and right, the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible, with uneven, slightly wavy edges. Peeking out around the pages is the worn brown leather binding, scuffed and thinned at the corners. The vellum is a warm cream, not a flat white: it has faint stains, small irregularities, and gently rippled margins. Each page is laid out in two dense columns of dark brown Gothic script, written in tight, regular lines that leave generous blank margins. The text is punctuated by initials in muted red and blue, some larger and filled with fine penwork tendrils, and by shorter passages in red ink that stand out against the dark writing. On the upper right corner of the right-hand page, the number “155” is visible. There are no human figures or scenes: the visual effect comes from rhythm, repetition, and tiny color accents across a calm, luminous surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the overall spread and the rhythm of the four columns, then move closer to a large initial and follow its delicate pen flourishes. Notice next the red passages: they break up the dark text and change this from a uniform block into a page designed to be navigated aloud. Finally, look at the worn edges and binding, which remind us this luxury object was also made to be handled.

ContextContexto

This is folio 155 of the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris around 1375 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to Charles V, but this is not provable: there are no royal portraits and no colophon. It was probably made for a Valois prince. Its name comes from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its name, the missal was not made in Gotha: it takes that name from the German dukes who owned it later, centuries after its Parisian creation.

What draws me in here is the vellum: that warm cream tone with faint speckles and gently wavy edges that reveal it was skin, not paper. Look at the thickness of the stacked leaves and how the central gutter sinks into shadow; the brown leather binding is worn at the corners from centuries of handling. I notice the balance: two dense columns of Gothic script in dark brown ink, with initials in muted red and blue and touches of red to guide the reader. With no pictures, rhythm is everything.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this opening like an ordered sky. Against a nearly black dark background, two bright vellum fields float like rectangular constellations. Each page is split into two columns, like meridians, and the lines are perfect parallels advancing with regularity. The accents in red and blue are like colored stars marking reference points, and the number 155 in the corner is the coordinate. There are no figures, just a system to find your bearings and not get lost while reading, like a star chart.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant open book that wants to hug you. The leaves are not white, they are cookie-cream color, with edges a little crooked and crinkly. Everything is written in two very tight columns in old brown letters, and suddenly there are little letters painted red and blue, some bigger with swirly decorations, like surprises. At the top right it says 155, as if it were a page from a super long story. There are no drawings of people, but I want to hover my hand close without touching.
