ink, tempera, and gold on vellum; blind-tooled leather binding
What you would seeLo que verías
An open book fills almost the entire image against a dark background, seen from above and slightly at an angle. It shows two cream-colored parchment pages, thick and gently uneven at the edges, with worn brown leather binding visible at the top, bottom, and outer sides. Each page is laid out in two narrow columns of dense handwritten text in Latin, in dark ink with a regular, vertical Gothic script. Rubrics and small initials in red and blue break up the writing and help organize it. Along the left margin of each page stand larger decorated initials, painted in blue, pink, black, and gold, with patterned interiors. From them grow delicate branching vines with small leaves and buds in blue, red, green, and gold that climb into the margins. The right-hand page has a small number 38 at the top right and a red Roman numeral beside it. The light is even and soft; it reveals slight stains, the smooth surface of the vellum, and the thickness of the accumulated gatherings. No human figures appear; the visual effect comes from the contrast between the strict order of the columns and the free growth of the marginal decoration.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the rhythm of the two-column script, then pause on the larger decorated initials. Notice how the slender vines continue into the margins and soften the density of the text. The small red and blue marks change the reading: this is not only a text to be read, but a page designed to be navigated visually.
ContextContexto
This is an opening of the Gotha Missal, a bound manuscript made in Paris around 1375, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source attributes most of its decoration to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, an illuminator active at the court of King Charles V of France, who died in 1380. It may have been made for a Valois prince, or even for the king himself, but that cannot be proved: there are no royal portraits and no colophon. It takes its name from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual detail: some ornamented initials are almost as tall as several lines of text and send out tiny painted leaves that seem to climb, freehand, up the blank margin of the parchment.

What captivates me most here is the material. I see two thick pages of cream-colored vellum with irregular edges, surrounded by worn brown leather binding. The dense, regular Gothic script is arranged in two columns per page, interrupted by small initials and rubrics in red and blue. I linger on the larger initials in blue, pink, black and gold; from them sprout slender vines with leaves in blue, red, green and gold climbing the margins. The even light reveals foxing spots and the smooth vellum surface.

For me this Missal of Gotha, made in Paris around 1375, is like an ordered sky. Each page holds two strict columns of Latin text, like aligned constellations in dark ink. But in the margins the decoration breaks free: thin branches with buds in blue, red, green and gold climbing unchecked. There are no human figures, only that contrast between order and growth. On the right page, at the top, I see the number 38 and a Roman numeral in red, like coordinates to navigate the book and find the exact prayer.

This book looks huge and super old! It is open and fills almost the whole picture, with its two pages like thick creamy tortillas. Everything is written in tiny black letters packed together in two columns, and suddenly there are red and blue little letters that look like secrets. What I like most are the big letters in blue, pink and gold, with sparkles!, and from them sprout little branches with colorful leaves climbing up the edge like playful vines. There are no people, just little climbing plants.
