What you would seeLo que verías

A thick bound volume is seen open against a dark background, showing two full pages of cream-colored vellum. The edges of the block of pages are visible at the sides, slightly irregular and aged, and at the left part of the brown leather binding can be glimpsed. Each page is covered by dense columns of small Gothic script in dark brown ink, with headings and marks in red and blue. There is almost no blank space within the text blocks, but the outer and lower margins are wide and clean. The eye is drawn to the large illuminated initials, mainly on the right-hand page and at the lower left: letters in deep blue and muted pink, with white filigree details, touches of red, orange, and gold, and rectangular frames. From several initials sprout delicate stems with small pointed leaves in blue, pink, red, and green that climb into the margins and curl into spirals. On the right page, a large initial near the top extends like a dark diagonal shape toward the text. At the upper right corner the number “39” is visible, and in red, “xiii.” The light is even and soft, revealing the smooth yet slightly wrinkled surface of the parchment and the contrast between matte ink and the discreet shine of gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall spread, almost like a woven fabric of text, and then move closer to the illuminated initials, where color and gold break the regularity. Notice how the vines escape the letters into the margins and seem to grow across the blank parchment. That contrast between disciplined writing and free ornament changes the reading: this is not only a text to read, but an object to contemplate.

ContextContexto

This is an opening of the Gotha Missal, a liturgical book made in Paris around 1375, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was produced with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a blind-tooled leather binding. Most of its decoration is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, an illuminator active at the court of King Charles V of France, who died in 1380. The source notes that it may have belonged to Charles V or to a Valois prince, but this cannot be proven because it has no royal portraits or colophon. It takes its name from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its luxurious decoration, the manuscript has neither a colophon nor royal portraits, so its first owner cannot be identified with certainty.

  1. How does the experience of reading change when a sacred text is also an object of luxury and visual contemplation?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de leer cuando un texto sagrado es también un objeto de lujo y contemplación visual?
  2. What might the vines growing from the initials suggest about the relationship between writing, nature, and devotion?¿Qué pueden sugerir las enredaderas que nacen de las iniciales sobre la relación entre escritura, naturaleza y devoción?
  3. If the first owner cannot be known for sure, what clues in a book can speak about the world for which it was made?

I pause on the cream-colored vellum surface, which looks smooth but slightly rippled under even light. The thick book lies open showing two dense pages with small gothic script in dark brown and rubrics in red and blue. I notice the irregular edges of the block of leaves and the brown leather binding on the left. The initials in deep blue and muted pink with white filigree and golden touches are very well preserved, as are the delicate stems with little leaves climbing the margins. You can see the work done with ink, tempera and gold on vellum in Paris around 1375.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This open book reminds me of an orderly night sky. The two cream pages are like maps full of constellations of small gothic letters in dark brown, with red and blue marks guiding the reading like reference stars. The wide clean margins are the empty space that lets the text breathe. The illuminated initials in blue, pink and gold work like bright planets, and from them sprout vines with little leaves curling in spirals like orbits. At the top right the number 39 and the red xiii make me think about how we number and order the universe so we do not get lost.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at all those tiny little letters! It looks like they leave no empty space on the cream pages. The book is really thick and you can see its brown leather on one side. What I like most are the giant colorful letters, blue and pink with little white dots and a bit of shiny gold. From those letters come little plants with colorful leaves that climb like vines and curl at the edges. On the right page there is a big letter that makes a dark diagonal shadow over the tiny letters. At the top you can see a 39 and little red letters that say xiii.
