What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from the front, slightly from above, on a dark background that makes the pale vellum stand out. Two pages fill almost the entire image, divided by a soft shadow in the central gutter. On each page the text is arranged in two dense columns of dark brown Gothic lettering, with small red marks that punctuate the reading and signal changes of section. The margins are wide and creamy, irregular at the edges, with the wear expected of an old volume. Within the text appear historiated and decorated initials in deep blue, muted red, pink, and gold; some are several lines high and anchor delicate stems that climb into the margins. Those branches bear small pointed leaves in blue, red, and gold, like stylized ivy, and end in fine curls. The left page shows several initials of different sizes; the right page repeats the rhythm, with a small red rubric near the upper margin. Around the text block the worn leather binding, the thickness of many stacked leaves on the right side, and the fore-edges darkened by time can be glimpsed. The light is even, with no harsh reflections: it lets the matte texture of the vellum, the crispness of the script, and the restrained shine of the gold be appreciated.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the two dense columns of script as a texture; only then look for the decorated initials that interrupt them. Follow a delicate marginal stem from a large initial to the edge of the page and notice how it links reading with ornament. Look at the edges of the volume to remember that this is not a flat sheet, but a heavy book made to be handled.

ContextContexto

This opening belongs to the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris around 1375, according to the source data, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. A missal contains the texts used for the celebration of Mass. The decoration is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, an illuminator active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have been produced for the king or for a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain: there are no royal portraits or colophon to prove it. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its name, the missal was not made in Gotha: it takes that name from the German dukes of Gotha who owned it later, while its production was Parisian.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has made visible. The cream vellum looks matte with uneven edges, the leather binding is worn and the fore-edges appear darkened. I notice the even brown ink of the gothic script and the red rubrics that organize the reading. I love the initials in blue, red, pink and gold, with stems climbing the margins like ivy. That soft gold without harsh shine and the delicate tempera tell me the work was cared for with reverence.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this open book like a neatly ordered night sky. The two text columns per page feel like aligned constellations, divided by the shadowed spine. The initials in deep blue, red and gold shine like brighter stars, with stems and tiny pointed leaves tracing orbits along the wide margins. The small red marks are guideposts so you do not get lost, like waypoints. Everything invites slow reading, following those lines, as if traveling across a sky map.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant and very old book. It has two light pages full of little brown letters arranged in two columns, and tiny red letters that show where to continue. What I like most are the big letters in blue, red, pink and shiny gold. Little vines with blue and red leaves sprout from them and climb along the edge like ivy. It looks thick, with many pages stacked together and darkened edges. I want to get closer to see each tiny leaf.
