What you would seeLo que verías
In the center of the image, a thick open book fills almost the entire frame, photographed from above in a top-down view. Two parchment pages in light ivory, with slightly wrinkled texture and irregular, darkened edges, show more pronounced wear along the top and fore-edge; the left side reveals a dense stack of pages. Each page holds two columns of dense Gothic minuscule script in black ink, with small rubrics in red interspersed between lines. On the right-hand page, decorated initials stand out: a P, an O and a D in the left column, painted in intense blue with red and blue pen flourishing, and two larger initials in the right column, an E and an I, with gold bodies and warm hues and intertwined vegetal motifs. Delicate marginal decoration in blue, red and green, tipped with stylized leaves and tiny gold dots, extends from these initials into the white space. The lighting is even and diffuse, with no harsh shadows, allowing the contrast between ink, parchment and pigments to remain clear. The scale suggests a large, heavy altar book with a blind-tooled leather binding just visible along the top and bottom edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the overall view of the two open pages, then focus on the right-hand page. Follow the vertical line of blue and gold initials and see how color organizes the reading of the text. Notice the fine flourishing that trails from the letters into the margin and how that delicate detail turns a text page into a precious object.
ContextContexto
The image shows the Gotha Missal, a manuscript dated to about 1375 and made in Paris using ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic patrons and is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, an artist active at the court of King Charles V who died in 1380, and his workshop. The manuscript takes its modern name from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners. Although its lavish quality suggests it was made for a Valois prince and possibly for the king himself, there are no royal portraits and no colophon, so its original patron remains unproven.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Gotha Missal retains its original blind-tooled leather binding, which is rare for a 14th-century manuscript, and its blue and red pigments still show remarkable intensity after more than six centuries on vellum.

If you look closely you will notice what I love most: the pale ivory parchment with its soft wrinkles and edges darkened by time, thicker on the left where the stack of leaves builds up. The gothic script in two columns per page is incredibly dense and regular, in black ink with red rubrics marking pauses. I linger on the illuminated initials, especially the E and I on the right with gold and warm tones, and the blue and red filigree of the P, O and D. The marginal tendrils with tiny leaves and gold dots are surprisingly fresh after more than six centuries.

I see constellations. The two open pages are like two skies of ivory parchment and each column of gothic script is a row of black stars perfectly aligned, with red rubrics like red giants marking important events. The initials in deep blue and gold are bright nebulae, the E and I are the most luminous, as if they hold their own light. Even the little gold dots on the margin remind me of stardust. Photographing it from above with even light is like making a map of the medieval sky, orderly, measurable and made to guide, just as a missal guided the liturgy.
Yo veo constelaciones.

This book is huge! It looks like an open bed for giants with wrinkly ivory sheets. It has tons of tiny black letters packed together in two columns on each side and some little red letters in between. The prettiest part is the big colorful letters, there is a blue and red P, O and D, and a golden E and I that shine with twirly little plants. Around the edge there are vines with leaves and gold dots like confetti. I wonder how heavy it is and if someone could carry it to the altar alone without help.

If you count the columns of tiny black script on each open page, how many are there per page?
HintPista
Look at the left page and then the right: the text is split in half by a vertical white space.
#2
On the right-hand page, find the two largest and shiniest initials, with gold and warm colors. Which letters are they?
HintPista
They are in the right column, one below the other, with little vines, leaves and gold dots trailing from them.
#3
What color are the shiny little dots decorating the marginal tendrils next to the initials?
HintPista
Look for the metallic shine among the blue, red and green marginal decoration, the same as the body of the large initials.
