ink, tempera, and gold on vellum; blind-tooled leather binding
What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is seen from above, centered against a nearly black background that makes its pale pages stand out. Both leaves are cream-colored vellum, slightly wavy at the edges, with soft shadows in the central fold where the binding curves. At the left edge a strip of worn brown leather binding is visible, scratched and pierced by small holes. Each page is organized into narrow columns of small Latin script ruled with faint lines. The ink alternates between dark brown, red and blue, creating a rhythmic pattern of short entries, numbers and abbreviations. At the top of each page stand two large initials, K and L, painted in deep blue and rose pink with fine white tracery, gilded details and delicate pen flourishes that rise into thin curls and tiny dots. Small colored initials punctuate the text halfway down, like discreet markers. The right page has a short paragraph isolated near the bottom, leaving a generous blank margin, while the left page continues its list almost to the lower edge. There are no figures or scenes: the beauty rests on the regularity of the handwriting, the shine of gold and the balance between full text and empty parchment.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two large KL initials and then move down the columns as a medieval reader would. Notice how color works as a code: it separates dates, feasts and instructions at a glance. Look closely at the worn binding and the uneven edges before returning to the perfect regularity of the script.
ContextContexto
This open spread belongs to the Gotha Missal, made in Paris around 1375 with ink, tempera and gold on vellum, in a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to the king or to a Valois prince, but that is not known for certain: there are no royal portraits or colophon to prove it. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

The large letters KL at the top of each page abbreviate Kalendae, the Latin word for the first day of the month, from which the word 'calendar' derives.

I focus on how fragile this cream-colored vellum is, slightly wavy with a worn brown leather spine marked by small holes. I look at the rhythm of brown, red, and blue ink in very regular Gothic columns, and especially the shine of the gold around the initials K and L in deep blue and pink with white filigree. It is a Parisian luxury object from around 1375, made to last for centuries if light and humidity are controlled.

I see this medieval calendar as a map of time. Each line in Latin with numbers and abbreviations marks saints and feasts, just as today we mark moons and seasons. The initials K and L in blue and pink with gold highlight months, and the red and blue help keep track among so many days. I picture someone in Paris around 1375 looking here to know when to pray or when to watch the sky to find their place in the year.

It looks like a giant book opened like butterfly wings. Its pages are cream colored and look really soft but very tidy, with lots of tiny letters in brown, red and blue. At the top there are two huge letters, K and L, painted in blue and pink with shiny golden curls and little dots. I like that it has no people in drawings, just pretty letters and lots of white space, as if they left room for it to breathe.
