What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume fills almost the entire frame, seen from directly above against a dark background. Two creamy, slightly uneven vellum pages form a symmetrical opening, with the central fold in shadow and the worn brown leather edges of many leaves visible at the sides and bottom. Each page holds two narrow columns of dense Gothic script in dark brown-black ink, carefully ruled and tightly spaced. The text is punctuated throughout by initials in red and in blue with gold, some large and square, which break the columns into readable sections. Certain words and passages are also written in red ink. From several large initials, extremely fine stems curl into the margins, ending in tiny leaves, pointed buds, and small dots in blue, red, pinkish tones, and gold. The decoration is delicate rather than showy: thin black tendrils with small three-lobed leaves drift across the pale, empty margins. The vellum looks matte and slightly mottled, with soft stains, gentle undulations, and small imperfections. At the upper right of the right-hand page there is a small red folio number, and at the lower left a faint later numbering. No figures or scenes appear on this opening; the visual rhythm comes from script, color, and ornament.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, look at the opening as a whole to notice the balance between the two pages and the four columns. Then follow one of the fine vine tendrils from a large initial to the edge of the page. Finally, compare the dark ink with the red and blue marks: that contrast changes the page from a dense block of writing into a guide for reading aloud.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is Folio 66r, Text, from The Gotha Missal, made around 1375 in Paris, France, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. Its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, an artist active at the court of King Charles V, who died in 1380. It probably belonged to a Valois prince, and possibly to Charles V himself, but that is not known for certain: there are no royal portraits or colophon to prove it. The manuscript takes its name from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso

The book is called the Gotha Missal not for where it was made—Paris—but for the German dukes of Gotha who owned it later.

I pause on the creamy, matte and mottled vellum, with soft stains and gentle ripples from time. I notice what the workshop cared for: two columns per page of dense Gothic script in very dark brown ink, tightly set lines and words in red to guide prayer. The initials in red and blue with gold are not showy, but from them sprout ultra-fine tendrils with trilobed leaflets and tiny golden dots. The shadowed central fold and worn edges speak of use and of a leather binding that still protects the book.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this vellum sky as if it were a clear night over Paris around 1375. The dark background makes the two creamy pages glow like lit windows. The very dark brown ink is the night, and each red and blue initial with gold is a constellation marking the way through the text. Those thin tendrils with tiny leaves and golden dots feel like orbits and shooting stars in the empty margins. With no figures, rhythm comes from calligraphy alone, just as the universe finds order without needing every story drawn.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant open book that fills almost the whole picture. It has two creamy pages with two columns of tiny, tightly packed letters, like little ants in formation. Some letters are big and bright in red and blue with golden shine, and from them sprout little vines with leaves floating in the white borders. You can see spots and the edges of many pages. There are no people drawn, just letters and skinny little plants. I like to imagine someone painted it very carefully a very long time ago.
