What you would seeLo que verías
A single circular object is shown from directly above, centered and filling almost the entire frame against a smooth, plain light gray background. It is a small disk, slightly domed in the middle, with a round but somewhat irregular dark hole at its exact center; through the hole the gray background is faintly visible. Around the hole are two fine concentric rings incised into the surface, forming a calm, flat inner circle. Beyond those rings, the outer border carries a repeating pattern of short, deep, angled cuts arranged as zigzags or pointed rays, like a stylized sun or star running all the way around the edge. The material looks smooth and polished, creamy ivory to warm beige and honey, with brighter glossy highlights near the top and along some raised areas. The grooves are darker, tan and brown, and hold soft shadows. Fine scratches, tiny speckles, small cracks near the central hole, and slightly worn, uneven edges suggest age and handling. There are no people, text, or other objects; the scale is not indicated by any reference, so in the photograph the piece feels larger and more monumental than such a tool would be in the hand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the dark central hole and move outward, ring by ring, as if following the spin. Then look closely at the zigzag border: its cuts are not perfectly regular, and that slight hand-made unevenness is what gives the object life.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this piece as a spindle whorl made in Iran during the early Islamic period, dated to the 700s–900s, by an unknown maker. It is carved from bone with incised decoration and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art's Textiles department, as a Gift of Edward Gans. A spindle whorl was fitted onto a spindle to add weight and help it keep turning while fibers were twisted into thread. Its more specific place of manufacture, owner, and original context are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A spindle whorl works like a small flywheel: its weight keeps the spindle rotating longer, making it easier to twist loose fibers into a continuous thread.

I love how this polished bone still holds the trace of handwork. I see a smooth surface in creamy ivory and honey tones, with bright highlights where hands touched it for years. Around the central hole there are two fine incised rings that create a calm center, and along the edge a zigzag of deep angled cuts like sun rays. The grooves hold ochre and brown tones, with tiny cracks and worn edges that speak of use and age, with no unnecessary decoration.

To me this disc is a small portable cosmos. The dark hole in the center looks like an eclipse and the two fine rings frame it like orbits. The carved edge with pointed zigzag cuts reminds me of a stylized sun or a spinning star, just as it must have spun on the spindle to twist fiber into thread. That ivory shine catching the light on top makes me think how something so everyday could bring the sky into the spinner's hand.

It looks like a little bone donut or a cookie with a tiny hole in the middle. It is light honey colored and shines a lot on top as if someone polished it while playing. Around the little hole it has two drawn circles and on the edge lots of little zigzag points that look like sunshine rays. I like to imagine it spun really fast like a top to make thread and that it fits in my hand even though in the photo it looks huge.

Look at the center of the piece: how many fine incised rings surround the dark hole?

Look at the smooth calm area around the hole, they are very thin circular lines.

In the photo, what color is the smooth background the disc rests on?

It is a soft neutral tone that lets the dark hole show through a bit.
#3
Look at the decorated edge: what repeated shape forms the carved pattern, like sun points or rays?
HintPista
Think of a broken line going up and down all around the circle.
