What you would seeLo que verías

Against a plain, light gray background with no pronounced shadows, a circular object is shown frontally, filling most of the frame. It resembles a thick doughnut, although no scale is provided, so its actual size cannot be determined from the photograph. At its center is a perfectly round hole through which the background is visible. Around the hole lies a smooth inner ring in pale ivory, outlined by a dark incised line. The surface is polished bone in cream, honey, and beige tones, with faint grain, small brownish marks, and a soft sheen that is strongest near the bottom. Its decoration consists of incisions darkened to brownish black, perhaps by wear or accumulated dirt. Two parallel diagonal bands cross the upper and lower areas; each contains a row of small circles with a central dot, like repeated eyes. To the left and right of the hole are flower-like clusters of four or five similar circles. Partial motifs peek out at the top and bottom edges, cut off by the circumference. Some incisions look worn, irregular, and shallower than others—traces of hand manufacture and prolonged handling.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the empty center and the smooth ring around it, the part designed to fit onto a spindle. Then follow the two diagonal bands and compare their repeated circle-and-dot motifs with the flower-like clusters on either side. Notice the partial motifs cut off at the top and bottom edges: they suggest that the decoration continues around the curved surface, beyond this single view.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this object is a spindle whorl made of incised bone in Iran during the early Islamic period, between the 700s and 900s. Its maker is unknown, and it entered the museum as a gift from Edward Gans; it is now classified in the Department of Textiles. A spindle whorl was mounted on a spindle and, through its weight and inertia, helped sustain the rotation while fibers were twisted into thread. It is not known who made it, who used it, or exactly where it was found. It probably belonged to an essential everyday activity, yet its careful decoration suggests that even a common tool could be an object of aesthetic attention.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small motif repeated across the surface—a circle with a dot in the center—is often called a "ring-and-dot" or "circle-and-dot" pattern, a simple design that can be made with repetitive incising tools and appears on bone objects from many different cultures.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does decorating such a small working tool change the relationship between its user and everyday labor?¿Cómo cambia la decoración de una herramienta tan pequeña la relación entre quien la usa y su trabajo cotidiano?
  2. What might the repetition of circles and dots have meant to the person who made or used it, beyond pure ornament?¿Qué pudo significar la repetición de círculos con punto para quien lo hizo o lo utilizó, más allá de un simple adorno?
  3. What information about this object's life is lost when only one face is photographed, without scale or views of its thickness and reverse?¿Qué información sobre la vida de este objeto se pierde al fotografiar solo una cara, sin escala ni vistas de su grosor y su reverso?

What draws me in is the polished bone with that soft sheen on the lower part, a sign of long use. I see the cream and honey veining, the small brownish spots and the incisions filled with a brownish black tone from wear. The diagonal bands and the dot-in-circle motifs look slightly irregular and worn, traces of hand making. I wonder how it was cleaned without erasing that patina that is also part of its history.

I see a thick bone donut floating on a smooth gray, like a small planet with a perfect void at its center. I love how the weight and inertia of this ring helped keep the spindle spinning, like a flywheel that preserves motion. The dot-in-circle patterns remind me of tiny eyes or stars lined up in two diagonal bands. It feels everyday and cosmic at once, a circle spinning to create another circle.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a cookie-colored donut made of bone with a hole in the middle to peek through. It has two crossed belts full of little round eyes with a dot inside. On the sides there are little flowers made with those same eyes. It looks smooth and shiny on the bottom, as if someone touched it a lot and a lot. I like to imagine it spinning and spinning without stopping while making thread.
