What you would seeLo que verías

Two ceramic lion sculptures form a symmetrical pair, placed side by side against a plain, very pale gray background with no other elements. Each lion lies at rest on a low rectangular pedestal with a central notch at the front that breaks its straight outline. The lion on the left faces forward, its head raised, round eyes open, and muzzle closed; the one on the right is shown in profile, turned toward the right, with its mouth partly open. Both rest one front paw on a smooth sphere and keep the other paw stretched out along the base. Their hind legs are tucked in close to the body, and the thin, curved tail folds back over the legs. The mane is voluminous, modeled in coiled tufts that frame the face and fall over the neck; there is also curly fur between the paws. The finish is intensely glossy, with elongated white reflections across the back, legs, and spheres, suggesting a glazed, smooth, almost wet surface. Deep wine red and mottled purple predominate, with pinkish and whitish tones most visible on the pedestals, which have a slightly rougher texture and vertical streaks imitating wood or stone. The claws are only lightly marked, and the muscular yet stylized bodies take up nearly the full width of their bases.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First compare the heads: one looks straight at you with its mouth closed, the other turns away in profile with its mouth open. Then follow the extended front paw on each figure down to the smooth sphere it holds, and notice how the mottled glaze changes across manes, bodies, and bases.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where this work belongs to The Norweb Collection, it is a pair of lions by an unknown maker, dated to the 1900s. The source lists the culture as France, 20th century, but adds a question mark, so that origin is not certain. The technique is terracotta with a mottled purple tin glaze, and the work is classified as ceramic in the Decorative Art and Design department. Reclining lions with a paw resting on a sphere are a long-standing decorative motif associated with power, vigilance, and guardianship. How this pair was originally used is not known; it was probably made as an ornamental pair.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although they form a pair, they are not mirror images: the lion on the left faces forward with its mouth closed, while the one on the right is shown in profile, roaring or with its mouth open.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in the character of the pair because only one lion meets the viewer's gaze?¿Qué cambia en el carácter de la pareja porque solo uno de los leones mira directamente a quien lo observa?
  2. What might the sphere beneath each paw symbolize, and how does its meaning shift in a decorative object?¿Qué podría simbolizar la esfera bajo cada pata, y cómo cambia ese sentido en un objeto decorativo?
  3. How does the wine-red, purple glaze affect our perception of animals usually associated with golden or stone tones?¿Cómo influye el esmalte rojo vino y púrpura en la percepción de unos animales que solemos asociar con tonos dorados o de piedra?

I pause to look at the shine, that intense gloss from the mottled purple tin glaze tells us a lot. The terracotta underneath is fully covered and catches light with long white reflections on backs, paws and spheres. I notice the different texture on the pedestals, rougher and with vertical veining that mimics stone. The manes shaped in coiled tufts and the curly hair between the legs show careful modeling for a decorative work from the 1900s.

I see these two lions as nighttime guardians. One looks straight ahead with wide open eyes, watchful, the other in profile facing right with its mouth slightly open. That resting yet alert pose, with one front paw on a smooth sphere, reminds me of constellations keeping watch over the sky. Their symmetry feels like a cosmic balance, like two companion stars guarding their territory atop those low pedestals while everything else stays still.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They are two shiny little lions that look like candy! One stares right at you with its round little eyes and the other looks to the side as if it just heard something. I love that each one has its own little ball under its paw, like they are playing without moving. Their manes look fluffy with lots of curls and their thin little tails curl over their back legs. They are lying down next to each other and look very fancy.
