Bothwell Castle at Sunset, 1826Castillo de Bothwell al atardecer, 1826

lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
This black-and-white lithograph presents a Romantic landscape at dusk. In the middle distance, silhouetted against the light, stands the bulky, ruined mass of a medieval castle with crenellated towers and broken walls, its dark reflection barely touching a river that fills the lower third of the image. The sky is streaked with thin clouds and a pale luminous band where the sun sets directly behind the towers, creating a soft glow that separates the fortress from the horizon. In the foreground on the right, a rocky, sandy riverbank anchors the composition: stacked felled trunks showing their sawn rings, uneven boulders and sparse tufts of grass. Two tiny human figures provide scale — one standing with a staff and cloak seen from behind, another seated leaning against the logs. Tall trees with sinuous trunks and dense canopies frame the scene on both sides; those on the right are slender with finely hatched bark, those on the left fuller and darker. The lithographic technique yields a grainy texture in the sky, delicate lines for foliage and velvety shadows on the castle, with a gentle contrast between light and gloom that conveys a quiet, melancholic stillness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark castle silhouette set against the sunset glow, then follow the river to the two small figures on the bank. Notice how the cut logs and the trees on the right frame the view and lead the eye toward the distant ruin; that contrast between detailed nature and shadowed architecture shifts the reading from imposing monument to intimate landscape.
ContextContexto
This lithograph is titled Bothwell Castle by Richard Parkes Bonington, a British artist active in the early 19th century, dated 1826 according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. Bothwell Castle is an actual medieval fortress in Scotland on the River Clyde, often depicted by Romantic-era travellers and artists. The work reflects early 19th-century English taste for picturesque ruins and atmospheric effects. The source provides no further details about commission or edition, though lithography was a common technique for disseminating topographical views at the time.

Curious detailDato curioso
Bonington was a precocious master of lithography and watercolour; although he died very young at age 25, he had a significant influence on English and French Romanticism and on the development of landscape lithography.

This black and white lithograph makes me first notice the technique: the grain of the sky, the velvety shadows of the castle, and the fine lines of the bark. I observe the soft contrast between light and dusk, typical of 1826, achieving that melancholic sunset without color. I linger on the rocky foreground with felled trunks showing rings, rocks, and scattered grasses; it is a tactile record. As a Print department work, it speaks of how picturesque views of Scotland were circulated.

I look for light and here the setting sun is the protagonist even though it is not directly visible. That pale band behind the crenellated towers separates the castle from the horizon and explains the backlight that turns the ruin into a silhouette. I like how the thin clouds reflect the last glow over the River Clyde occupying the lower third. The cloudy sky is not just decoration: it marks the time, the end of day, and leaves the landscape in quiet suspension between day and night.

It looks like a fairy tale castle but it is broken and dark, like a giant sleeping by the river. I like finding the two tiny people: one standing with a staff and cloak seen from behind and another sitting on cut logs. Tall trees hug it on both sides, some skinny and others very leafy. The sky looks sad and pretty at once, with faint light behind. I imagine it is silent and only the water can be heard.
