Three granite figures stand in a row on a flat, reddish surface against a smooth wall whose color shifts from a very dark garnet at the top to a deep orange-red behind the sculptures. In the center, noticeably taller than the others, stands Vishnu, front-facing with a calm expression. He wears a very high, conical crown covered with carved decoration, jewelry at his neck, chest, arms, and waist, and a long garment that falls to his ankles with curved, scalloped folds. Of his four arms, the upper two raise a discus in profile and a conch shell; the lower right hand is open in front of his chest and the lower left rests by his hip. At his sides, smaller and on round pedestals very like his own, stand Shri and Bhu, also front-facing, with pointed crowns, necklaces, broad hips, draped belts and skirts, and lotus flowers in one hand. Their feet are bare and their bodies stand perfectly straight. The stone is a matte, grainy gray-brown, visibly rough to the eye, which makes the rounded surfaces of the bodies contrast with the tiny incised details. Soft light from the front and slightly above leaves gentle shadows behind them and clearly separates the trio from the warm background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the difference in height between the three figures and read from the center outward: first Vishnu's four arms, then the attributes carried by the goddesses at his sides. Finally, look closely at the grain of the granite and the fine carving of the crowns, necklaces, and garments. A detail that changes the reading is that such serene, orderly stillness stands for divine authority, not inaction.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is Vishnu with Shri and Bhu, a granite sculpture dated to 900–950, from South India, Tamil Nadu, probably Pudukkottai, during the early Chola dynasty in the 10th century. The author is unknown. Vishnu is shown as supreme lord, with a high crown and four arms indicating his superhuman nature. In his upper hands he holds a discus, seen in profile, and a conch shell. Beside him, Shri, goddess of abundance and good fortune, and Bhu, goddess of the earth, hold lotus flowers. No more precise information about the original temple it came from is recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Vishnu's two upper attributes are complementary: the conch is associated with the primordial sound and water, while the discus, or chakra, is associated with the sun, time, and the destruction of ignorance.

This stone makes me pause. It is grayish granite with brownish tones, matte and grainy, and although it looks rough to the eye, the bodies are polished into rounded forms. I notice the scalloped folds of Vishnu's garment and the towering crowns filled with incised details. The extra arms show his superhuman nature, but what moves me most is the balance: everything upright, frontal and serene, as if the trio had endured ten centuries without losing its calm.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see Vishnu in the center, taller than Shri and Bhu, like a central planet with two satellites at its sides. His four arms remind me of orbits holding symbols: the disc seen in profile and the conch shell above. The goddesses, with their lotuses, look like smaller constellations completing the system. The wall behind shifts from dark garnet to orangey red, like an evening sky that makes this small universe carved in stone from southern India stand out.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Vishnu is the one in the middle and he is the tallest of the three, he looks like the dad of the group. He has a super tall crown like a birthday hat and four arms, with two things up top! One is like a little wheel and the other like a snail shell. At his sides are Shri and Bhu, smaller, with pretty skirts and flowers in their hands. They are all standing barefoot on their little round stools and they look very calm together.
