What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a wide cream margin sits a rectangular page with a warm, gilded-brown ground. Within it, a pale block of Latin calendar text is written in neat dark script, with entries picked out in red and small decorated initials in red, blue, and gold. Letters and saints' names line up in careful columns, made for slow daily reading. Around the text, curling silver-gray acanthus leaves twist like carved metal, brushed with soft shadows to give them volume. Among them bloom precisely observed plants: a deep red rose at upper left, a pale pink flower, small blue blossoms, a red strawberry near the bottom corner, and red poppy-like flowers. A pale yellow butterfly rests near one stem, and a tiny blue bud hangs alone on the right. At the lower edge, an oval medallion framed in silver holds a small outdoor scene: a man in a bright orange tunic, white hose, and dark hat walks across pale ground carrying a basket on his back and holding a tool, while a second, smaller figure appears above him beneath a blue sky and beside green trees. Beside the medallion struts a blue peacock with gray wings and a large copper-orange tail, almost as tall as the scene itself. The whole surface feels smooth and jewel-like, with fine brushwork and touches of gold catching an even, gentle light.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the text block and its quiet rhythm of black, red, and gold, then move out to the exuberant border. Finish at the lower medallion and compare its tiny rural scene with the peacock beside it, larger than the man himself.
ContextContexto
This is folio 10v, the calendar page for September, from the Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders. It is painted in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. The source attributes it to the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian and associates; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, working with a circle of at least five highly organized painters renowned for realistic borders of flowers, birds, and butterflies. As a book of hours, it served the private devotion of a layperson rather than a cleric. Isabella probably did not commission it herself: it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros.

Curious detailDato curioso
A telling quirk of scale: the peacock painted in the border stands taller than the laborer inside the medallion, because the border is decoration at the page's real size, while the man belongs to a miniature world inside a circle.

I pause on the vellum, like polished ivory, and how the gold still holds light without tarnishing. The warm brown-gold ground and the silver-gray acanthus show the Flemish technique from around 1500: tempera built in very thin layers in Ghent and Bruges, attributed to Alexander Bening’s circle. Notice the soft shadows under the red strawberry and the deep red rose, the sheen on the blue peacock with its copper tail, and the silver frame around September’s small medallion. It reveals five skilled hands using tiny brushes for private devotion.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
This is the September calendar, a time map from before printed clocks. The block of Latin text with red and blue initials lists each day’s saints, a guide for praying while watching the sky and the seasons. Below, the small oval with the man in a bright orange tunic carrying a basket on his back shows the labor of the month, sowing, under a blue sky that matches late summer. It is not telescopic astronomy, it is farming time joined with church time. The borders with flowers and a pale yellow butterfly remind us the year moves with nature.

This page looks like a secret garden around a book! On the border there is a red strawberry like candy, a big deep red rose, tiny blue flowers and a pale yellow butterfly taking a rest. My favorite is the blue peacock with a copper orange tail, it looks almost giant next to the tiny man below! That man wears a dark hat, orange clothes and a basket on his back, as if he is going to plant seeds. Everything shines like a jewel and the gray leaves look like swirly metal. I want to count all the flowers.
