What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an almost empty vellum page, in a warm cream tone, with very faint reddish ruling lines marking the text block and margins. Most of the surface is blank, smooth, and luminous, with a matte texture and slightly irregular edges. On the left, occupying a narrow vertical strip, is a painted border on a sandy, golden-ochre ground. Within it grow slender green and reddish stems with small leaves, buds, and flowers rendered in minute detail. At the top there is a round, intensely blue flower, beside a small mauve bloom; below are pink and blue blossoms like sweet peas, with curled tendrils and pointed buds. On the left edge, a pale yellow butterfly with black spots and a delicate outline rests vertically, almost blending into the ground. Lower down, another deep blue flower opens, accompanied by a small white and pink bloom near the base. The plants cast an illusion of slight relief, as if laid on top of the page. To the right of the border, several lines of text appear extremely pale, grayish, and reversed, showing through from the other side of the leaf. The overall effect is quiet, fragile, and precise.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the narrow band on the left and follow the stems from bottom to top, as if you were climbing the plant. Then look at the supposedly blank area on the right: the writing that seems erased changes the reading of the page. Finally, compare the precision of the petals and the butterfly's wing with the softness of the parchment around them.

ContextContexto

This is folio 153v from the Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, identified here as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximillian. A book of hours was intended for a layperson's private devotion. Isabella's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by her, but received as a diplomatic gift; the source suggests Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros as a possible giver, though this is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the text on the right is not written on this side: it shows through in reverse from the other side of the thin vellum, like a ghost of the facing page.

I pause on the warm cream vellum and how it breathes under a soft matte light, with its slightly irregular edges and the faint reddish ruling that holds the empty text block with quiet precision. The gilded border captivates me for its technique, tempera and gold creating a subtle trompe l’oeil where slender green and reddish stems seem to rest on the surface. Every brushstroke reveals the care of the Flemish workshop around 1500 and the intention to preserve a private devotion as a luminous, fragile material presence that still endures.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this almost empty folio I think of a clear night sky where only the border remains like a strip of nearby stars. The golden background between ochre and honey feels like stardust, and there deep blue flowers float like small constellations with a pale butterfly suspended in orbit. The silence of the vellum and the ghostly show-through text remind me of faint light traveling from afar to reach our eyes with infinite patience and quiet wonder.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love the little yellow butterfly standing sideways as if it got tired from flying and wants to rest among the flowers! The tiny blue and pink blossoms look like candy with their curly tendrils and the golden background sparkles like beach sand in the sun. I like that the page is almost empty because I can imagine painting whatever I want there and that the soft vellum keeps quiet little secrets just for me.

If you look at the painted border from top to bottom, what little animal with pale yellow wings and black dots do you find perched vertically?

    HintPista

It is on the golden strip on the left side, among blue and pink flowers, almost blending into the background.

  2. #2

On this almost empty page something shows through from the other side of the folio, what is it?

    HintPista

Look to the right of the golden border, you will see very pale grayish inverted lines.

  3. #3

What intense color is the round flower that stands out at the top of the golden border?

    HintPista

It is the same deep tone that appears in two other flowers in the border and contrasts with the gold.
