If you look closely you will see why this border moves me. The pale salmon-pink strip is not a pasted frame, it is paint on vellum pretending to be another layer of parchment. Each deep violet-blue violet with its yellowish center is built up with very thin tempera glazes and its soft shadow creates the trompe-l'oeil effect, as if it were floating. That ghostly show-through of the gothic text from the other side reminds me how extremely thin the skin is and how fragile it remains after more than five hundred years.

It looks like someone glued real little flowers and made them float. There are five purple-blue violets and in the middle they have a tiny yellow dot like a little sun. There are green heart-shaped leaves and a small bud that has not opened yet. Everything is on a peach-colored strip beside the page. If you look closely you can see their little shadows underneath, as if they were not touching the paper. I like it because it feels delicate and it seems like if you blow they will move.
