What you would seeLo que verías

This vellum folio shows a manuscript page on a pale ivory ground, divided into two distinct areas. On the right, a block of Latin text in dense black gothic script runs across nine lines; large opening initials D and S are ornamented with white filigree on a warm ochre-gold ground dotted with small light-blue accents, and several words are backed by horizontal gold bars with the same blue dotting. On the left, a vertical border panel in a soft tan-gold tone acts as a flat surface on which natural elements are painted with trompe-l’oeil precision and delicate cast shadows: at the top a white moth with brownish veining, then a vivid five-petaled blue flower, a white blossom with a reddish center on a thin green stem, below a deep blue cornflower with a dark center, two small reddish-brown buds on a slender green stalk, and at the base a tiny five-petaled pink flower. The light is even and diffuse, colors are rich yet muted, and the textures of vellum, burnished gold, and tempera pigments appear smooth and luminous. Wide, empty margins surround the text and border, giving the small, intimate composition an airy, reverent presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the contrast between the strict, rhythmic gothic script and the free, naturalistic border on the left. Then look closely at the soft shadows under the petals and the moth, which make them seem to rest on the page surface. That interplay between written prayer and lifelike nature shows how the book joined devotion with visual delight.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from a book of hours illuminated around 1500 by a circle of at least five highly organized manuscript painters working in Ghent and Bruges in Flanders, with Alexander Bening as the principal illuminator, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Books of hours were made for the private devotion of lay people rather than clergy; this one was owned by Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, 1451 to 1504, whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by the queen herself but received as a diplomatic gift from someone seeking her patronage, perhaps Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, a Franciscan friar who became her confessor in 1492 and Archbishop of Toledo in 1495. The technique is ink, tempera and gold on vellum, and manuscripts from this group are renowned for borders decorated with realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies.

Curious detailDato curioso

Manuscripts from this Flemish circle are celebrated for border decoration featuring flowers, insects and birds rendered with such naturalistic detail that they are seen as forerunners of later still-life painting.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the presence of flowers and insects alongside the prayer text shape the way you read the page?¿Qué relación sientes entre el texto sagrado y las flores e insectos que lo acompañan al margen?
  2. How does knowing this lavish book was for private, everyday prayer change its meaning for you?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura al saber que este libro lujoso era para rezar en privado y no en una iglesia?
  3. What might the careful, almost scientific rendering of nature suggest about devotion at this time?¿Qué te sugiere que la naturaleza se pinte con tanto detalle dentro de un objeto de devoción?

I focus on the materials: light ivory vellum, tempera and gold that still catches the light. I notice the black gothic script in nine lines and the large initials D and S with white filigree on golden ochre and pale blue dots. Behind the text there are gilded bars dotted with blue. Next to it, the vertical border on a warm ochre ground mimics a smooth surface with soft trompe-l’oeil shadows. I examine the white-winged moth, the blue flowers, the white one with a reddish centre, the deep cornflower and the still luminous pigments.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I read this folio like a small ordered universe. On the right, nine lines of Latin text form a steady column, like a typographic constellation with two brighter stars: the initials D and S in golden ochre and blue. The dotted golden bars seem to trace subtle orbits. On the left, the ochre strip is the sky where a pale-winged moth, blue flowers, a white one with a reddish centre, a deep cornflower, reddish buds and a pink flower float with trompe-l’oeil effect. Everything feels calm and precise, like an intimate map for contemplation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love the little border with the bug and flowers! On the left there is a white moth with brown streaks that looks like it just landed. Below there are lots of little flowers: a blue one with five petals, a white one with a pinkish centre, a strong blue cornflower and two tiny reddish buds on a thin green stem, and at the bottom a small pink flower. Everything is painted to look real, with little shadows. On the right there are neat black letters in nine lines and two big golden letters with blue that shine a lot.

  1. #1

In the text block on the right, how many lines of black gothic script do you see?

    HintPista

Count the horizontal rows of black letters from top to bottom, not counting the large golden initials.

  2. #2

In the vertical border on the ochre ground, which pale-winged insect appears at the top?

    HintPista

Look at the top of the border for a small creature with white wings and brownish streaks, painted with a soft shadow.

  3. #3

Of the two large illuminated initials in the text, which letters are they?

    HintPista

They are golden capitals with white filigree and touches of pale blue, one at the start of the column and one further down.
