What you would seeLo que verías

The vertical vellum leaf is cream-colored and mostly empty, with wide margins surrounding a compact block of text and a narrow border in the upper left half. On the right, about twelve lines of Gothic script in dark brown ink form a tight rectangle, with highly regular lines, abbreviated Latin words, and a few passages in red marking openings or directions. A large initial D, decorated in pinkish and gold tones, stands out, as does a smaller red V. To the left, against a golden ochre ground with a finely speckled texture, grows a plant painted much larger than the letters. At the top are white five-petaled flowers with yellow centers, a small bud, green three-lobed leaves, and a plump red strawberry marked with seeds and casting a slight shadow. Below, an iris dominates: pale blue and deep violet petals curl with soft folds beside a brown bud and long, pointed green leaves. Thin stems join the upper and lower plants into one impossible stalk. In the lower right margin a tiny word, turned sideways and only partly legible, appears in isolation. The light is flat and even; everything looks sharp, still, and exquisitely detailed.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First read the page as two columns: one made of words, the other of plants. Then move closer to the red strawberry and notice the painted shadow and dotted seeds that make it lift off the gold ground. Finally, follow the stem downward: its impossible connection to the iris changes a decorative border into a small invented garden.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 46v from the Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. A book of hours was a prayer book for the private devotion of a layperson. The manuscript is attributed to the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian and associates; Alexander Bening painted most of its miniatures. Isabella's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. She probably did not commission it herself: it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, although that donor is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Ghent-Bruges illuminators were famous for borders so realistic that flowers, birds, and butterflies seem to rest on top of the page; here, however, the strawberry plant and the iris share a single invented stem that could not exist in nature.

What holds me most is the contrast between emptiness and precision. The cream-colored vellum is almost empty and that lets it breathe, but the block of text in dark brown ink and the little plant on the left call for a magnifier. I notice the dotted golden ochre background and how the red strawberry and the blue and violet iris keep their volume with soft shadows. That single stem joining different flowers is the painter's invention, not real botany, and the gold and tempera remain stable.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to think of this folio as a night sky. The wide, pale margin is like the empty firmament, and the compact rectangle of twelve lines in Latin is an orderly constellation, with its little red marks at the beginnings like guiding stars. The large pink and gold D shines like a major planet and the small red V like a lesser companion. The large-scale plant with its strawberry, blue iris and white flowers with yellow centers feels like a star chart from another world.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like it has a garden stuck to it! On one side there are many neat little brown letters and two red letters, a big D with gold that looks like a jewel. On the other side, on a dotted golden background, a magic plant grows with white flowers with yellow centers and a yummy red strawberry with tiny seeds. Below there is a light blue and purple iris with long green leaves. I do not get how one little stem can have both strawberry and iris at once, it feels like a trick!

In the block of Latin text, how many colored initials stand out for their size and decoration, one large pink and gold and one small red?

    HintPista

Count the capital letters that break the rectangle of brown ink.
