What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single page of pale cream vellum, photographed against an almost white ground with wide, empty margins. Near the center-left sits the main block: on the left, a narrow vertical strip with a granular orange-ochre background suggesting sand or matte gilding; on the right, a dense column of handwritten Latin text in dark ink, in compact Gothic script, with regular lines and a few initials or words picked out in red. At the foot of the text is a small horizontal border in the same ochre tone, with two pale circles with dark centers. Down the left-hand strip run three delicately naturalistic flowers: a pale pink bloom with a yellow center, a light blue one also with a yellow center, and, lower down, another pink flower on a green stem with three leaves. Between the second and third flowers rests a white butterfly with open wings, a slender body, and subtle shading. The flowers cast minimal shadows and look as if they had just been laid on the surface. Even, glare-free light reveals the softness of the vellum, the fine brushwork of the petals, and the precision of the calligraphy.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First compare the density of the writing with the lightness of the border: prayer and nature share the same page without competing. Then look closely at the butterfly and the flowers' stems and shadows, which make them seem placed on top rather than painted. That small illusion changes the folio from a text to a quiet, tangible object.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 94v from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), a Flemish book of hours from around 1500, made in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum in the milieu of Ghent and Bruges. The source attributes it to the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian and associates, identifying Alexander Bening as the principal illuminator of most of the miniatures. It was made for the private devotion of a layperson, not a cleric. Isabella probably did not commission it herself; she may have received it as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, but this is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

The source notes that this circle of at least five Flemish illuminators was renowned precisely for borders like this one, filled with realistically painted flowers, birds, and butterflies.

Look at the pale cream vellum, so smooth it seems to breathe. I pause on the orange ochre border that mimics sand, on how even light reveals every brush hair. Those three flowers — two pink roses and one light blue — are not glued, they seem just placed there, with minimal shadows that trick the eye. I worry about that lower border with its two circles and the white butterfly: such delicacy on a private devotional book is fragile, and I think of the tempera and gold on vellum from around 1500.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am a sky watcher, but here I look for constellations in miniature. The page is like a sky in two parts: on the right the dark Gothic script, regular as aligned stars, with red touches like red giants. On the left the ochre void is the firmament where three flowers float: pale pink, light blue and pink with stem and three leaves, all with yellow centers. Between them the white butterfly is a comet at rest. It is all Flemish stillness from around 1500 made for private prayer.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone left real flowers on the book and forgot a butterfly! At the top there is a little pink rose with a yellow center, then a little blue flower also with a yellow center and at the bottom another rose with its green stem and three little leaves. In the middle there is a white butterfly with open wings as if it is resting. Next to it there are many tiny black letters neatly lined up with some in red. I like that everything looks soft and calm, as if it makes no noise.
