What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a small print in black ink on ivory-toned laid paper, photographed against a light gray background. The printed image is shaped as a vertical oval and occupies only the central part of the sheet; around it lies a wide margin showing the paper’s fibrous texture, faint spots, and the indented mark of the printing plate. Below, outside the artwork, the number “1963.274.1” can be read. Inside the oval, a nighttime scene brings together more than ten tiny figures among trees. At the center, a figure in a long, light-colored robe stands while another embraces or points toward him, surrounded by soldiers with spears, a flag, and helmets. On the left, bodies crowd together, lean forward, and raise their arms in agitated gestures. On the right, a man seen from behind holds a lit torch high, its flame bending with the smoke; beneath it, a figure appears kneeling or fallen on the ground. A tall, twisted tree closes the scene on the right, while other foliage frames it on the left. The etching is made with extremely fine lines, cross-hatching, and blank areas that suggest light. The lower foreground is shaded with horizontal strokes, like dark earth or water, and the background grows lighter toward the center.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the long, pale robe at the center and the embrace surrounding it, then move left toward the spears and the flag. After that, follow the raised torch on the right and look down until you find the small figure on the ground. That low figure changes the scene from a gathering into a confrontation.

ContextContexto

According to the source, *The Mysteries of the Passion* was made by French artist Jacques Callot (1592–1635) in 1631. It is an etching from France, catalogued as a print by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which credits it as a gift of the Folio Club. The title places it among episodes from the Passion of Christ. Based on the torches, soldiers, and the central embrace, this image is probably the Arrest in the Garden, possibly the moment of Judas’s kiss, but the source description is empty, so that identification cannot be confirmed. Callot was a major Baroque printmaker, known for packing dramatic scenes into very small formats.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the tiny size of the oval, at least ten figures can be distinguished, several carrying spears, swords, a flag, or a torch.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in your reading of the scene if the central embrace is understood as affection, betrayal, or arrest?¿Qué cambia en tu lectura de la escena si el abrazo central se entiende como afecto, traición o detención?
  2. Why might an artist choose such a small oval format to depict a moment of collective violence?¿Por qué un artista elegiría un formato ovalado tan pequeño para representar un momento de violencia colectiva?
  3. How do the trees, torch, and darkness affect the feeling of enclosure in the scene?¿Cómo influyen los árboles, la antorcha y la oscuridad en la sensación de encierro de la escena?

I look first at the paper, not the scene. It is an ivory laid paper, with a wide margin, fibrous texture, and even the sunken plate mark around the oval. The black ink is extremely fine, full of cross-hatching to create shadow and light. I wonder how that bright center has been preserved against the horizontal shading below. Outside the oval, the number 1963.274.1 reminds us this is a catalogued sheet, cared for as a document.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this is a night engraved in ink. There are no stars, but all the light comes from that torch held by a man on the right, with its curved flame and smoke. Everything else is darkness made of tiny lines. The center stays brighter, as if the torchlight barely reaches the tunics and helmets. It is curious how with only black and white Callot suggests it is nighttime among the trees, without needing to paint a dark sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little egg with a story inside. There are so many tiny people together, as if they are fighting or pushing each other. A man in a light tunic is in the middle and another one hugs him. On the right a man lifts a torch with fire and near him someone is lying on the ground. Everything is surrounded by trees with lots of little leaves made of lines. I like to count how many spears poke out among the people.
