What you would seeLo que verías

Ovoid ceramic jar with broad shoulders tapering to a small foot and a short flared neck, centered in the frame against a neutral gray background. In the foreground the full volume dominates: a sturdy, rounded body of medium scale, likely about 30 to 40 cm tall, with two small loop lugs where shoulder meets neck. The surface has a semi-gloss translucent glaze in muted gray-green, beige and mottled brown, with fine crackle and darker fired patches. The shoulder is covered in dense, very fine incised horizontal lines that create a textile-like texture. Around the lower midsection a bordered frieze displays white slip-inlaid scrolling vines and leaves incised against a darker clay ground, fluid and calligraphic. Near the foot, a band of incised triangular motifs suggests stylized mountains or petals. Light creates a highlight on the upper left shoulder, revealing pitting, subtle color variations and handmade throwing marks. The overall palette is earthy and soft, with a quiet, aged sheen.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the three horizontal zones: densely lined shoulder, central scroll frieze, and geometric foot band. Follow the white inlaid vines to see how they stand out from the brown ground. Look closely at the tiny lugs and the uneven rim to appreciate its handmade, ritual character.

ContextContexto

Buncheong ware from the Joseon dynasty in Korea (1392–1910), dated to the 1400s per the Cleveland Museum of Art record. Maker unknown. Made with incised, stamped and slip-inlaid white decoration under glaze. According to the source description, this jar type was made exclusively to bury a newborn’s placenta and umbilical cord, a custom among aristocratic families who regarded them as symbols of the fetus’s life force and believed a specially arranged burial would bring happiness to the child. It is part of the Korean Art department at the Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund.

Curious detailDato curioso

Buncheong ware with white slip inlay was at its height in 15th-century Korea before white porcelain became dominant at the Joseon court, and placenta jars known as tae hangari were often buried in sites chosen for auspicious geomantic properties to protect the child’s future.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does knowing it held a placenta rather than food or water change the way you read its careful decoration?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del objeto al saber que no era para contener alimentos o agua sino para un entierro ritual vinculado al nacimiento?
  2. What connection do you see between its earthy, textile-like surface and ideas of protection and continuity of life?¿Qué te comunica el contraste entre la decoración delicada de roleos y la función íntima y corporal que tuvo?
  3. Why might an elite family invest artistic skill in an object meant to be buried and never displayed?¿De qué manera el color sobrio y la textura recuerdan a un tejido o a la tierra, y qué relación podría tener con la idea de proteger la vida?

From my restoration table the first thing I notice is the technical intelligence of this ovoid Joseon jar. I focus on the shoulder with its horizontal incised lines so fine they look like woven fabric, and on the central frieze where white slip fills incised vegetal scrolls that contrast against the darker clay body. The semi glossy glaze in gray green and beige tones is finely crackled, showing firing spots and the handmade turning marks. Two small ear shaped handles at the neck balance its simple and functional form.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this jar and think about cycles. In the fifteenth century a Korean aristocratic family would place a newborn's placenta and umbilical cord inside, as if burying a small moon that had nourished the baby. They believed choosing the right burial site would bring happiness, much like aligning a birth with a favorable constellation. Its ovoid and full bodied shape reminds me of a planet, its broad shoulders like a horizon and its mottled glaze like a distant surface, holding vital force for the future.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This jar looks like a big belly with two tiny little ears near the neck. If I hug it in my imagination it feels like a piggy bank for keeping something very important from when a baby is born. I like its stony green and beige color and the drawing of little plants with white swirls in the middle. Near the bottom it has pointy shapes that look like mountains. It does not shine a lot but it has tiny cracks and spots because it was handmade a very long time ago with great care.
