What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white engraving on aged ivory paper, horizontal format, densely arranged as an ornamental pattern sheet. The dominant form in the lower center is a large bracket or console seen in profile, with bold Baroque scrolls, acanthus foliage rendered with fine hatching, and deep S-curves, topped by a fantastical bird with outspread wings, raised chest and a long beak perched on its edge. Floating around it are seven circular medallions of varying sizes, each filled with intricate openwork of scrolling vines, foliage and central urns; some show geometric diaper grounds of lozenges or scales, others include grotesque masks and cartouches at the top. Near the lower left is another medallion and two elongated horizontal friezes with continuous bands of vegetal scrollwork and strapwork. The line is crisp, contrasting solid black areas with delicate etched hatching that suggests metallic volume and lace-like texture. Along the bottom edge appears the inscription P. Bourdon in. et fecit. Cum pr. R. and a small reddish collector's stamp. A thin border frames the composition, with tiny fleuron ornaments in the upper corners.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the large bracket at the bottom center and follow its S-shaped curve up to the bird on its ledge. Then compare the circular medallions to see how each balances empty space and dense foliage differently. Look closely at the narrow friezes at the bottom, where ornament becomes a repeatable border for craftsmen.

ContextContexto

This print is plate 5 from the Livre second essais de gravure, created around 1703 by French designer Pierre Bourdon using etching and engraving. As noted in the series title page and documented by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the designs were advertised as useful for clockmakers, goldsmiths, chasers, engravers and other craftsmen who made ornamented objects such as boxes and pistols. In the late Baroque to early Régence period in France, such pattern books provided reusable models for metalwork, woodwork and decoration, while also catering to aristocrats and wealthy amateurs who collected prints as fashionable entertainment. The work belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Bourdon's plates were not intended as wall art but as workshop tools: craftsmen traced or copied the scrollwork directly onto clocks, snuffboxes and pistol mounts, which is why multiple unrelated designs are grouped together on a single sampler sheet.

Looking at this plate I see a black-and-white engraving on aged ivory paper, with black ink and very delicate etched hatching. I focus on the crisp linework, the contrasts between solid black and hatched shading that give volume to the acanthus leaves. At the bottom you can see the signature P. Bourdon in. et fecit. and a reddish seal, plus the thin border with small corner rosettes. It shows how paper and ink still preserve their metallic texture.

This 1703 plate reminds me of a star chart made of ornaments. I count seven circular medallions floating around, like planets of different diameters, plus another in the lower left corner. Some have diamond or scale-pattern backgrounds, others have scrollwork and foliage. At the lower center a large bracket with baroque volutes stands out, crowned by a fantastic bird with outstretched wings. It is an ordered universe where each orbit is a design for clockmakers or goldsmiths.

This sheet looks like a treasure poster! In the middle there is a giant thing with lots of curves like a roller coaster and on top a weird bird with open wings and a long beak. Around it float seven circles with tangled plant drawings, little vases and funny faces called mascarons. At the bottom there are two long strips with vines and another little circle. Everything is black and gray on cookie-colored paper and has lots of tiny lines that make it look shiny like metal.
