Lucas van Leyden (Netherlandish, 1494–about 1533) · 1524 · Netherlands, 16th century
engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the print, rendered with dense, high-contrast engraved lines, an older standing man grips the head of another man seated on the ground and presses the blade of a curved knife against the back of his neck, just behind the ear. The surgeon, in the upper foreground, wears a soft tilted cap, a cloak with a shaggy fur collar and puffed, slashed sleeves; his bearded face is furrowed in concentration as he leans forward, one hand clutching the patient's hair and the other guiding the tool. The patient kneels on the floor with bent legs, dressed in a loosely laced doublet, patched hose and torn shoes with toes peeking through; his swollen face, twisted mouth and wide eyes looking out at the viewer, and his raised right hand with splayed fingers, convey pain and pleading. Behind them, a wooden bench and a shadowed arched niche framed by fine stippling enclose the scene. To the right, on a small ledge, a basin with liquid waits. Light models folds, wrinkles and textures of hair, fabric and skin through exquisitely fine hatching and cross-hatching, with «1524» and an L-shaped monogram inscribed at the top.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the knife at the neck and the two hands holding the head, then move down to the patient's raised hand that seems to beg for pause. Notice the contrast between the surgeon's heavy, well-kept clothing and the man's rags on the floor, and how the engraved light brings out textures of skin, hair and fabric.

If you look closely you will see why Lucas van Leyden was so admired as an engraver in 1524. Everything is made with burin on metal: the dense linework, the strong contrast, and that dotted shading framing the arched niche. I focus on how light models different textures with very fine lines and cross-hatching, from the furry trim of the cape and the slashed, puffed sleeves to the skin, wrinkles, and hair. The L-shaped monogram and the date at the top are also engraved with precision, part of what makes this print from the Cleveland Museum of Art so valuable.

I am fascinated by how this black and white print creates its own contrast of light and shadow, almost like a night sky. The dark dotted niche behind and the wooden bench frame the two figures as if they were constellations. The surgeon above, with his soft tilted cap and cape, is the bright star; the patient below, with his loose laced doublet and broken shoes showing his toes, is the dim area. The basin on the ledge to the right shines like a small moon waiting. And at the top, the 1524 and the L-shaped monogram mark time, like a date on a celestial map.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
Ouch, that must hurt! The man sitting on the floor is kneeling with his legs bent and his clothes are all torn, even his broken shoes show his toes. His face looks puffy, his mouth is twisted and his eyes are wide open looking at us, and he lifts his hand as if saying stop! The other man standing, with his crooked cap and fuzzy cape, holds his head tight and puts a curved knife behind his ear. Behind them there is a little wooden bench and to the right a basin with liquid that he seems about to use. I would not want to be there!
¡Yo no querría estar ahí!
