What you would seeLo que verías

The painting is shown mounted within a wide border of cream silk brocade with a pale, swirling damask pattern, which frames a nearly square image in aged, brownish tones. A gnarled old tree rises diagonally from the lower left, its thick trunk twisting, splitting into contorted branches, and reaching toward the upper edge. Dense clusters of dark green needles or small leaves gather in cloud-like masses, while other branches remain bare, ending in fine, claw-like twigs. At the lower left, slender bamboo leaves press against the trunk, drawn with thin, precise strokes. On a horizontal branch at right, two white birds sit side by side, their backs mostly to the viewer; black caps, soft rounded bodies, and very long, pale tails with dark speckles hang below the branch. Beneath them, in the lower right, pale foam and rolling waves suggest a cataract or torrent, rendered with light washes and curving lines. The background is an empty, misty brown-grey void that deepens the sense of height. Vermilion collector's seals appear at upper left and mid-right, with a small inscription at lower left. Fine horizontal cracks and the silk's matte, fibrous texture are visible throughout.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the two white birds and only then follow their branch back to the knotted mass of the tree. Look down next, to where quiet perching gives way to churning water. The small red seals and the fine cracks in the aged silk remind you that this intimate scene has been handled and preserved for centuries.

ContextContexto

"Birds on a Tree above a Cataract" is attributed in the source data to Li Di (Chinese, c. 1100–c. 1192) and dated broadly to 1127–1279, during China's Southern Song dynasty. It is an album leaf in ink and color on silk, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, a gift of Mrs. A. Dean Perry. Album leaves were made for close, unhurried viewing. The work belongs to the Song tradition of bird-and-flower and landscape painting, prized for close observation of nature and for suggesting a large world within a small surface, though the exact date and place of its making are not known from the data provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact: the two protagonists almost turn their backs on us — their black caps and long, spotted tails are easier to see than their faces.

I focus on that aged silk that is no longer white but a toasted cream color, with its horizontal cracks and its matte, fibrous texture. I see how the light brocade mount protects the image and how the red seals above and at mid-right interrupt the misty emptiness without harming it. Down on the left I make out the small inscription and the fine bamboo leaves clinging to the gnarled trunk. It is an album leaf made to be looked at up close, and that makes me value every pale wash of the waterfall and every dark touch of foliage as fragile work that has survived for centuries.

I love the misty emptiness between brown and gray that surrounds the twisted tree, because it looks like a dawn sky or a fog hiding what is below. The diagonal trunk climbing to the top edge makes me think of great height, as if we were on a cliff. On the horizontal branch to the right are those two white birds with their backs turned, with black crests and very long tails hanging down, motionless while below the coiled foam suggests moving water. It is stillness and falling at once, a pause suspended above the torrent.

The tree looks like a friendly monster with bent arms reaching all the way to the top! Some little branches look like tiny claws and others have green blobs like broccoli. Below there is bamboo with thin little leaves peeking out. And my favorites are the two fluffy white birds huddled together on the branch, with tails so long they hang like ribbons with little dots. Below there is white foam that looks like soapy waves from a waterfall. Everything is surrounded by a pretty cream fabric frame with wavy patterns.
