What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, against a studio background that fades from black at the top to almost white light gray below, sits a wide, low bowl, photographed from slightly in front and at the height of its rim. The piece is made of smooth, glossy, milky-white porcelain and casts a soft gray shadow onto the surface beneath it. Its body opens from a small, straight circular foot toward a broad mouth molded into five lobes reminiscent of petals; each lobe forms a gentle curve and a subtle vertical ridge on the outer wall. The wavy, uneven rim carries a thin brown line with small irregular speckles. The decoration, applied in overglaze enamel, is sparse and leaves much of the white empty. On the left, a plant grows upward and then bends toward the right: fine stems, small blue-green leaves, deep blue leaves, and red-orange five-petaled flowers, ending in two thin, star-like buds at the tips. On the right, very small and alone on another lobe, a butterfly appears in profile, with turquoise wings, red markings, and curled antennae. The light is diffuse, emphasizing the curvature without harsh reflections.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at how much white is left empty, then follow the plant as it rises and bends to the right. Only afterward, search for the tiny butterfly on the neighboring lobe: its small size changes the scale of the whole piece and makes the bowl feel like a miniature garden.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a bowl with butterflies and flowers created around 1700 by an unknown maker in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). It is porcelain molded into five lobes, decorated with overglaze color enamel, and identified as Hizen ware of the Kakiemon type. Kakiemon-type wares are generally known for their milky white body, restrained composition, and bright enamel palette. The exact kiln, the person who used the bowl, and its specific function are not stated, so it is probably best understood as a fine table object rather than attributed to a more precise use. It belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance and Greta Millikin Collection.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact: although the bowl is molded into five regular lobes, its decoration is deliberately asymmetrical — a tall plant on one side and, far from it, a single tiny butterfly, with most of the porcelain left blank.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the large amount of empty white change the way we notice the flowers and the butterfly?¿Cómo cambia el abundante blanco vacío la manera de mirar las flores y la mariposa?
  2. What relationship does the decoration suggest between the plant and the butterfly, even though they are far apart?¿Qué relación sugiere la decoración entre la planta y la mariposa, aunque están alejadas?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the milky white, smooth porcelain, molded into five lobes that open like petals from a small base. I notice the wavy rim with its thin brown line and soft spots, and the sparse overglaze decoration that leaves a lot of empty space. On the left, fine stems with deep blue leaves and reddish orange five-petaled flowers contrast with the tiny turquoise butterfly on the right. Everything breathes restrained serenity and delicacy.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see this bowl as a miniature night sky. The milky white background is a vast emptiness, like space, where only two constellations float: on the left a plant that rises and leans with reddish orange flowers and blue leaves, and on the right a single turquoise butterfly with red spots. The asymmetry reminds me how stars are not evenly spread. The five lobes of the rim are like phases holding that brief and serene universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This bowl looks like a giant flower someone turned into a little plate! It has five points like petals and it is white, white, like shiny milk. Almost everything is empty, there is just a little plant on the left with tiny orange flowers and little blue leaves that looks like it wants to hug the air. And on the other side, all alone, there is a tiny turquoise butterfly flying. I like that it is not all covered in drawings, so the butterfly has space to breathe and fly calmly.
