What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a tall white porcelain bottle, photographed standing against a plain gray background that darkens toward the top. Its body is a rectangular prism, almost twice as tall as it is wide, with straight edges, gently sloping shoulders, and a short, narrow, uncovered spout at the center of the top. The surface looks smooth and glossy, a milky white with tiny specks and faint imperfections visible only on close inspection. Soft light from the left casts a delicate shadow to the right and brings out the sheen of the glaze. The front face is mostly empty: a slender vine climbs diagonally from the lower edge toward the upper right. Its lobed leaves are painted in turquoise, blue, and touches of yellow, while small clusters of grapes appear in red and orange. Thin, curling tendrils in black, green, and red add a sense of movement. The design continues around the right edge, partly visible on the side, and is also hinted at on the top, where blue leaves and red marks are cut off by the frame. No hands or other objects provide scale, so the bottle feels both intimate and monumental.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the large field of white, then follow the vine from bottom to top as if reading a line of calligraphy. Notice how the decoration turns the corner and appears on the side and top, suggesting a design meant to be seen from several angles. Finally, look for the squirrel named in the title: its absence from this view changes how we understand the photograph.

ContextContexto

This is a square bottle made in Japan in the late 1600s, during the Edo period (1615–1868), by an unknown maker. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is porcelain with overglaze color enamel, possibly Hizen ware of the Kakiemon type. The source notes that in the 1600s Korean and Japanese elites could enjoy European wine: in his 1636 travel diary Haecharok, Kim Seryeom, a vice director among Korean envoys to Japan, recorded being served Western red wine by the head of Tsushima Island. Export porcelain such as this could therefore have been made as a wine bottle, although that use is probable, not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: despite the title Squirrel and Grapes, no squirrel can be clearly seen from this angle; the animal is probably painted on another face of the bottle.

I pause before the milky white and its soft shine, with those tiny dots that reveal the kiln and the passage of time. I look at the rectangular prism body, almost twice as tall as it is wide, with slanted shoulders and a short open spout with no lid. I follow the vine that climbs diagonally with lobed leaves in turquoise and blue with touches of yellow, and clusters in red and orange. The fine curled tendrils in black, green and red continue over the edge. It is a lesson in delicacy and emptiness, in enamel over glaze that still endures.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this bottle as a small portable night sky. The gray background that darkens toward the top reminds me of dusk, and the light coming from the left paints a soft shadow to the right like a lunar terminator. The vine traces a diagonal orbit, with turquoise and blue leaves like cool nebulae and red and orange clusters like warm star clusters. Even the black and green tendrils look like trajectories. I like to imagine that, if it held European wine for elites in the Edo period, it also held stories that traveled like constellations between Japan and the world.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This bottle is tall like a milk tower and very shiny, with a tiny little spout on top with no lid. What I like most is the wiggly plant that climbs sideways with blue and turquoise leaves and little red and orange balls that look like candy grapes. It has curly tails in black, green and red that hide along the edge and continue onto the side. If I touch it with my eyes, it looks smooth and cool. I imagine it is a magic bottle that holds giant grape juice for toasting with friends.
