What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page, creamy and slightly uneven, filled on the right by a compact column of Gothic script in dark brown and black ink, with small red initials and line-endings patterned in pink, blue, and gold. At the top of the text, a large inhabited initial encloses a haloed figure in a green mantle over pink, holding a small red book against a deep blue ground, framed in gold and rose. Around this orderly block the margins bloom. Interlacing stems in blue, green, pink, and red curl into leaves, gold dots, star-like flowers, and large quatrefoil blossoms in turquoise, gold, and crimson along the left edge. In the left margin a bare-breasted mermaid with flowing pink tail raises one hand; below her perches a small brown-and-black bird, and another bird appears near the bottom. At the lower right, a red fox-like creature with blue wing-like drapery strides forward reading an open book propped on a green tortoise. A faint "204" is penciled at upper left, and the bound edge shows at the far left.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the solemn text block and the haloed figure, then let your eye drift to the margins. That shift from formal prayer to mermaids, birds, and a reading fox is what changes the reading: devotion and play share the same page.

ContextContexto

This is folio 102v of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by two Italians, two French artists, and two Netherlanders. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant Zecho painted most of the borders.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine border painter signed his name, "Zecho da Firenze," on folio 208 verso — a rare, concrete signature in a book otherwise attributed to anonymous masters.

  1. Why put fantastical, playful creatures in the margins of a solemn prayer book?¿Por qué poner criaturas fantásticas y juguetonas en los márgenes de un libro de oraciones solemne?
  2. What does it mean that a luxury object like this was probably bought ready-made and then personalized with coats of arms?¿Qué significa que un objeto de lujo como este probablemente se comprara ya hecho y luego se personalizara con escudos de armas?
  3. How does working in several national styles on one page change how we think about "French" art around 1405?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea del arte «francés» hacia 1405 el hecho de que en una misma página trabajaran varios estilos de distintos países?

The conservatorLa restauradora

This creamy, slightly irregular vellum speaks to me of workshop labor. I see the column of Gothic script in dark brown ink with small red initials, and above it the large initial with deep blue ground and gold that still shines. I linger on the pink and turquoise of the four-petaled blossoms and the intertwining vines flowering in the margins. I notice the faint 204 in pencil and the binding edge on the left, traces of its life as an object that was used, stored and cataloged.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As if looking at a night sky, this folio orders its cosmos. On the right, the compact block of Gothic text is a dense dark center, while the margins bloom like constellations: gold dots, star-like flowers, turquoise and crimson blossoms against blue and green. The gilded initial above is a small sun with its haloed figure in green mantle over pink tunic. And below, that little fox-like reader on a turtle reminds me that even the most serious universes need their mischievous comets.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There is so much to spy on in the borders! On the left there is a pink-tailed mermaid waving her hand and two little brown birds. Down on the right a red fox-like creature with a blue cape reads a book on top of a green turtle, is it reading to her? All around there are vines with turquoise and golden flowers that look like stars. At the top the giant letter hides a little person with a small red book. I love that the serious text has so many hidden jokes.
