What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single vertical vellum page, folio 111v of an open book of hours, seen almost straight on, with the bound spine at left and the edge of another page at right. The support is creamy parchment, slightly irregular, with faint stains, darkened edges, and the number “222” written in pale ink or pencil at the upper left. At center-right sits a block of Latin text in dark ink, written in tight, regular Gothic script. Some initials are heightened in red, blue, and gold; a large blue-and-pink initial with a green interior and gold flourishes stands out toward the lower part of the text. Around the text on the left, top, and bottom grows an exuberant plant border: fine blue and gold stems, pointed ivy leaves, small red, blue, and green flowers, and curling tendrils. Among the foliage are meticulous details: orange-and-black butterflies, small birds—one yellow-green at lower left and another near the top—insects, and fantastic hybrid beings. At left appears a green creature with pink legs and red ribbons; at lower right another advances with a pink body, blue mantle and hood, a pale human face, and a little bell hanging from it. The light is even, without strong shadows, revealing the smooth, slightly satiny texture of the vellum and the discreet shine of the gold.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the block of Latin text and then let your eyes follow the ivy border outward. Notice how the decoration does not merely frame the page: birds, butterflies, and hybrid creatures turn the margin into a second, playful text. Finally, look for the large initial near the bottom; its scale and color mark a new beginning within the reading.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this page belongs to the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made around 1405 in Paris, France, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. French-born Charles probably acquired this book of hours—perhaps ready-made for the luxury market—during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, rather than commissioning it directly from a specific workshop. His coat of arms was painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The book was a collaborative effort: the source identifies six painting styles, by two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned and decorated the volume and produced seventeen large miniatures; his principal assistant, the Florentine “Zecho,” made most of the borders.

What moves me most is the creamy vellum with its darkened edges and soft stains of time, and the number 222 discreetly noted at the top. I look at the block of Gothic text and the initials in red, blue and gold, with that large blue and pink initial with a green interior that breathes under even light. The ivy border with thin blue and golden stems needs care: the shine of gold and tempera is still alive, and each butterfly and bird reminds us to control humidity and light so we do not lose them.

I see this page as a small ordered sky: at the center, the dark regular text is like a fixed constellation, and around it the border expands like a vegetal Milky Way with blue and golden tendrils. I pause on the details orbiting among pointed leaves and red, blue and green flowers: orange and black butterflies, tiny birds, insects and hybrid beings. The even light reveals the satiny texture of the vellum, as if the parchment were reflecting an ancient light we can still measure with patience.

This page looks like a secret garden around the letters! I love the vine with pointy little leaves and tiny colorful flowers and the little stems that curl like springs. There are orange and black butterflies and little birds, one yellow-green at the bottom and another at the top. My favorites are the funny little monsters: one green with pink legs and red ribbons, and another pink one with a blue hood and a little bell that rings in my imagination as it walks among the leaves.
